QUESTIONS

1. Why do you run?
My first running period was when I was about 48 and I ran until my fall from grace at about 51, completing 4 marathons several 10k's and 1/2 marathons. In addition to that I was working out at the health club 2 or 3 hours a day. My reasons at the time was that I was running away from myself. Ultimately this ended in my fall from grace and I quit running. On my return to running, I needed to run for mental health reasons. This over time changed and I run now because I can, and I love it.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?
I would have to say my greatest accomplishment was recovering from alcoholism. It took at least 30 tries to stop drinking and wasn't until I was able to retire, move to a calmer environment in Montana, find appropriate help and special friends that I was finally able to stay sober. This whole thing was really perplexing to me, as I couldn't understand how something could inspite of all logic take such control over my life while I was totally unable to do anything about it short of a miracle. Miracles do happen, I have been sober over 3 years now and I am getting my life back together and my creator blessed me with good health so that I could continue running and start enjoying life again. This has been my greatest accomplishment, with the help of others, that I could have even imagined possible. My joke since then has been "I went from a half gallon of Jack Daniels to the Jack Daniels running formula."
There are times now that I look back at this and see the suffering that this person(me) was going thru, and if there was something that I could do, I would have liked to have reached out to him, give him a hug and tell him that there is hope and it is going to be ok. Perhaps I have done just that, in our unexplainable universe, I did reach thru time and maybe, that is just why I made it thru.

3. What is your motto/theme song?
My motto is as my signature say's "If you see a man running up a mountain trail in Montana with a fly pole attached to his back, you are probably lost.

4. How do you deal with bad runs?
I don't have bad runs

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?
My running is the reward

6. Who do you admire most?
My secret

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
To trust my intuition

8. What do wish you had learned younger?
Patience

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?
I have tried to remove can't from my vocabulary. Something that is a pipe dream right now, is that I would really like to visit Ireland and Scotland.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?
Hard headed, confident, honest, complex
11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?
In the warm months shorts, cotton shirts, hat, sunglasses. Cold months running pants, wicking shirt or 2, windproof jacket, the hat in my avatar, sunglasses, knit gloves. My Garmin all the time.

12. What has been your favorite race? My favorite 10k has to be the Evaro Mountain Challenge. My favorite marathon was the St. George Marathon. My favorite Half Marathon was the Provo Half. My favorite 5k, I hate 5k's

13. Do you have a goal race right now?
I am still undecided on this. I was thinking about the SLC marathon, but it is too flat, I don't think I want to run anymore flat courses. The Wasatch Mountain Steeple Chase looks interesting and I may do that one. Still I might wait until late fall for a Marathon. Attending races is fun but for the most part I don't race even at a race. My pace for the LV marathon was just about the same as my last long run prior to that for 28.2 miles. I prefer to have goal run/adventures…the top of a mountain or something like that.

14. What makes you happy?
Avoiding negative self talk and cynicism. Planning a trail run and then doing it. The quite of living in the forest and enjoying the wildlife that comes to visit from time to time. Capturing photo's of the outdoors. I like to read, especially about Wildlife, Plants, Geology and other sciences, western history, running, outdoor and travel related stuff and etc. Music is always a plus. Watching those interesting forensic shows on TV. My dog roy and watching his enthusiasm when we go for a run. Sometimes running thru the forest, I will get into the cedars and I like to stop and meditate for awhile. Reading the post on the running forums. Fresh ground coffee and good food. Life in general, when one has knocked on deaths door can appreciate life and all it's gifts.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
My 60th birthday is March 25th, in the 3 or so years with CR Masters, know one has wished me happy birthday.

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!). Everyone on this forum is interesting and admirable.

A link to my photo's and where I run. http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...TheBitterroot/

Good Runs All, Larry

Nice to learn more about you, Larry.

Overcoming an addiction is one of the most difficult things a person can do. Congratulations on three years and counting.

I count it as my good fortune to have met you in person. I hope we can go for another run one of these days.

Larry, your birthday is the day before my oldest son's BD! Here's a belated birthday wish for last year (more than that would be tacky).
Thanks for sharing some pieces of yourself. I've always loved hearing about your life and runs in that beautiful country. (That photo you took of the eclipse is still on my pc as the desktop photo!!)

Hey Larry, let me let you in on something. If you don't tell anyone when your birthday is there is no way for us to know. Now that you are in my Palm Calendar it will be celebrated yearly

Congrats on your sobriety and keep on running!!

Going off to look at your pics (again)

Great post, Larry. I already knew or surmised some of these facts, but it was nice that you put them all right out there.

By the way, since there is no master birthday list that I know of, you sometimes have to drop a hint or two in order to wake us up. Such as this year you can say "today I'm in a new AG."
