1. Why do you run?

I run to find a truer sound, a truer self. That part of me that lives deep within and fuels anything and everything that I’m capable of, that I can & will achieve. Running has grown from something I did to keep up with the various sports I participated in to being a major part of me. Running is magical. To borrow from Liz Phair:

I feel the sun on my back, I smell the earth in my skin
I see the sky above me like a full recovery

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?

I’m not so sure I’ve had a greatest accomplishment yet. My younger self would claim that loving myself is in my greatest hits.

3. What is your motto/theme song?

I have several mantras that keep me going & a couple songs; they are applicable to running and other parts of life as well.

Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable.
[Yeah] it hurts, [now] get over it

Nothing’severgonnastandinmyway (Again): Wilco

Movin On: Good Charlotte … Not everybody knows that everybody could be living their last days. But the hard times will come and we'll keep movin' on …Life, Hope, Truth, Trust, Faith, Pride, Love, Lust. Pain, Hate, Lies, Guilt, Laugh, Cry, Live, Die

4. How do you deal with bad runs?

I get over them. They provide sharp contrast to when things are oh so right and should be treated for the experience that they are. I work harder next time out.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?

The good run is reward enough; I’ll also make a special note in my running log Oh and I enjoy some extra smoked cheddar popcorn.

6. Who do you admire most?

My parents, always and forever. You will not find two less selfish, sacrificing and caring people. They’re real people, people with all the craziness of raising 7 children, stretching their hard-earned dollars and making difficult decisions and countless sacrifices. They have always been my biggest cheerleaders and will be there for me regardless of the situation. I’m lucky to count them as incredible friends, travel companions and athletic supporters. If you ever see someone sporting a Team Pfeiffer t-shirt, buy ‘em a beer. They deserve it!

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?

This is an excerpt from Marianne Williamson’s Our Deepest Fear. A dear friend brought it to my attention many years ago. I believe it to be a very contagious passage …one that empowers people and aids in knocking down those obstacles that we may set up for ourselves. I love reading it over and over and over… I hope you do too.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others

8. What do wish you had learned younger?

Better money management skills and to buy real estate even when you don’t think you can afford it.

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?

Play the piano like Ben Folds, he’s the shit.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?

Loud, hard working, loyal, trustworthy, laughs a lot/smiles a lot/drinks a lot, positive, silly.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?

Something green, it’s my power color. In non-freezing seasons, I’ll usually have some color of these on:

My buds in the 30s have coined the term “Maria shorts”

12. What has been your favorite race?

NYC Marathon 2006. You have to run it to get the full effect but damn is it a sweet ride!

13. Do you have a goal race right now?

Chicago Marathon 2008. Sweet success (read: revenge) will be mine!

14. What makes you happy?

Lots. I love being happy, I love seeing the humor in situations and I love laughing at myself. I love a great run, a tasty meal, good beer, tough competition, good music and a great read. I’m happiest when I’m surrounded by my siblings playing CatchPhrase and enjoying some tasty beers.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.

This has been told in the 30s thread before; I was one of the first patients ever to have their kidney removed laparoscopically. My surgery was videotaped for use at Washington University’s Medical School, back in 1991. I was featured in Time, the Washington Post and in the stockholder reports for a firm that made medical instruments used in laparoscopic procedures.

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).

It seems I leave many a running partner waiting while I'm taking care of biz. Another very discreet 30s member was forced to wait quite patiently along East Drive in Central Park while I ducked behind bushes to take care of business. It was early in the a.m. and the bathrooms weren’t close by nor opened yet. He is loyal as all hell and didn’t leak (pun intended) the story to anyone.

There you have it folks... have a great day!

Great POTD, Maria!! You are such a positive, radiant person! I loved being around you in Philly. And I love the relationship you have with your sister. I think you two are the bestest. I'm going to put that quote on my bathroom mirror.
