How do your paces on your long runs compare when you just run all the way or do a run/walk ratio?

I tried a 5 min run / 1 min walk ratio today on a long run. I have never tried a run/walk method before. I paced myself on how I felt and kept the running conversational and easy and the walk part brisk but easy. I tried to not keep track of my overall pace until I was done. It turns out, this 12 mile run I did using this method was FASTER than my long runs where I just ran the whole time. I usually do long runs on this same course at around 11:30 - 11:20 min/mile and am kind of tired afterwards. This run was 10:37 min / mile and I felt fresher than I usually do after that same run. Is this normal? Am I going too fast? In one way it makes sense that the 1 minute walk breaks would refresh my legs but I did NOT expect my overall pace to be faster which makes me think I am missing something here...
