After starting 4 weeks ago ont he scorched plains of the greater Pendleton area, the Race to the Sun reached the sunny, verdent hills of Marilla on Sunday. With a warm breeze at our back, the pack rolled down the main street of Marilla, amid the cheers of various stary dogs and free range chickens. With some small hills and a decent selection of crosswinds, the course held the potential to break things up a bit and promote some more aggressive racing, maybe.

The first move of the day found two riders off the front, gaining a couple minutes over the slumbering pack. My team mate was one of the two, so I was happy to just let it sit. I was uncertain why many of the other riders put no effort into chasing this one down, when it was clearly doing well. After maybe 20 miles, the two off the front cracked and it was all even, so a series of attacks started, but the hills were not quite steep or long enough to get the job done. I was making most of the splits, but we kept getting pegged back. After a while, only maybe 10 of us remained, so we were just kind of rolling through and a strong rider went off the front, where he would remain.

On the last time up the rolling hills, I pu my head down and pushed it a bit and was happ to be able to ride right away, later joined by two strong guys. Our group had plenty of horsepower, but one guy wouldn't work as his temmate was up the road and the other guy was pulling pretty slow beacuse the other guy wouldn't work, so I didn't see any need to kill it either.

With our dithering, we were caught by a clump of 5 or so with a few miles left. At this point the pace was really slow and a series of dumb attacks ensued. Finally, the sprint wound up with 200m to go into the crosswind. The guy I needed to beat to stay in third on points was taking the sprint out pretty early with the points leader on his wheel, but I was just dangling off his wheel maybe 10 feet back, whoops. With 50 to go the second rider tried to come over the top into the windy side, thought better of it, tried to shove his bike through on the gravel shoulder, thought better of that and finally rolled across in third, with me 4th.

Time for the real racing to begin, I feel like my winter training left me in good enough shape without burning up too much time, so I'm positive enough about the bike, the run is another matter...

Consistancy is everything.

So why the dumb attacks you think? Were those folks yung-uns?

Sort of, for the most part it was people who have been racing badly for years and never really "get it", so they attack off the front or wait for a sprint finish when they are a lousy sprinter. With a mile to go, I went back to these guys and suggested they attack early rather than losing another sprint, so at least they tried, you have to be willing to take some risks I guess.

What amazes me is my capacity to never look very put together. Note the baggy tights, torn shoe covers, red wool jersey sticking out from under my jacket, the string hanging from my waist and the food stains on my jacket, it's just so motley. I was out a few years back on a training ride and one of the old Italian guys pointed at me and said "who is that man in the big coat? He looks very bad, he in not natural." So that always kind of stuck with me as the man in the big coat, but I do hate being cold...

I like the 'motley' look Great race and report JR. I am inspired by your tenacity on the bike-I am a self proclaimed bike sissy...but that's slowly changing.

There was some ice in spots, usually where the trees cast a shadow, so people just point and the pack steers around it, one of the little uphills had a lot of snow but it didn't keep the tires from sticking, so no worries. We race cyclocross on the snow and ice, but it's a little softer when you fall. I wiped out racing this time last year and I had so many layers on I just chewed up some clothes and had a sore hip, but no road rash.

Jr: I'd agree with your assessment that your winter training has left you in a very good place. Nicely done, old man! <-- I mean that in the kindest regard, because damn, look at a few of those youngsters!

The kid on the far right was the one I was supposed to make sure I beat in the sprint, he had spent the last two days up in Canada racing the madison on the velodrome, then he turned around and beat me in the sprint. The shorter guy I have reaced with since he was a high school kid coming off BMX, now he's 30 and we talk about our IRA accounts, he's a cat 1 and maybe one of the best sprinters in the state, he has raced sort of pro over the years but is now sort of a slacker like me, just a lot stronger. The tall guy is a D3 cross country runner who took up cycling and ended up winning the series, he does triathlons from time to time, we are pretty even in our bike splits but he's a better runner. I'm only the oldest by 16 years, that's not so much in dog years.

You continue to turn in very good racing and tactics. Those young guys have to work to their max to keep you at bay. You've got bike skills that most of us can only dream about. Plus you can write a fabulous race report! WTG!

Great job as always......I can't wait to get off my trainer and on the roads, BUT the roads will wait until it hits the 60''s.
