2mile run/ 16mile bike/ 2mile run

1st place relay team 1:09:08
(Ok, there were only 2 relay teams, but we smoked the other guys by 8 minutes)

After the whole sawblade through the toe episode, I didn't know if I could do this at all. But after some good bike trainer workouts last week with no toe pain, I decided to call a running buddy, Alan, about doing a relay.

Doing a relay was fun. But, it was a bit strange watching everyone else take off on the first run. When I got back over to the transition area, it was eerie and quiet. I tryed to stay warmed up while waiting, which didn't take long. The first runners were back in a little over eleven minutes and Alan came in at 12:11 for an awesome 6:05 pace run split. (He finished 2nd overall in a 3 mile road race the day before)

Transition was very quick as I already had my bike shoes and helmet on. As soon as I got the tag from Alan, the bike came off the rack, I was out of T1, on the bike and right into the head wind.

And MY OH MY what a wind!!

It never got good. It seemed like every direction I was fighting the wind. Add to that a couple of good hills and it made a bike ride that never got comfortable.

Add to that another factor, starting the bike leg in 9th place. I usually come into T1 anywhere between 15th and 25th place. Then steadily move my way up the field during the bike. I usually catch the biker in front of me. That's always my focus, catch the guy, move on to the next one. It was a different story today.

The problem today was, I never caught the guy in front of me. In fact, I got passed - 5 times. Grrrrr. I'm not used to that on the bike.

Add to that another factor. I think that I didn't get enough of a warm up before the race. I did ride a few miles and ran some. But I think I feel better getting on the bike after doing the 1st run leg. My legs never felt good.

I came into T2 with a 21.6 MPH avg. Not what I was hopeing for.

But, it ended up ok. Alan ran a 6:30 pace 2nd leg and we finished 11/141 overall. My bike split was 13th overall and 2nd in my AG, so not as bad as I thought. And when I realized that out of the top 20 or so bike places, I was the only "Old School" guy. Everyone else in the top 20 were on carbon bikes with aero wheels and wearing aero helmets. So, I guess I hung in there better than I thought.

We had a good showing of people from my tri club and a few of them brought home some AG awards. And we all enjoyed a post race meal of chicken and sausage jambalaya. Mmmm.

As far as my toe. Well, it's doing very well. I guess this pic says it all.
