Little XC race just up the road from me and about 2 mi from where the kids are DH skiing, so a perfect fit for a race. First event was a 10K skate, arrived in time to ski a smidgen and rolled up to the line while instructions were being read, got my sweats off and the gun went off. I stink at skating and the course with the lousy grooming and soft track was making me flail around even worse. Winner was gone from the gun, stayed in second for a while then stepped over and let a guy by, flailed along for a while to keep up then felt my lungs starting to explode so he slipped away, then another guy drilled me on the uphill. I was able to lumber home in 4th. Went into the hut and changed into my classic shoes and caked some blue extra on my skies and headed out the door to see the skiers already lined up. Asked the promoter to wait a minute and waded through he snow. Left my warm up pants on in my haste and shuffled off for the 5k classic, which was maybe more like 6k. Kind of a boring race tactics wise, the leader (the guy who was second in the skate) got a gap and kept making it bigger and I stayed in second. Fairly flat course so lots of double pole, left my arms like rubber. Skied a lap, stayed for awards and grabbed a shower at the campground before going over the hill to spend the afternoon skiing w/ my wife while the tykes took lessons. Nice day all in all.

Seems like it would be difficult to be pretty decent at both types of skiing unless you do a fair amount of training.

I always feel like my peers seem to be decent at both, but I tend to prefer the classic style and will do more of it in training, especially if the tracks are nice. We have had outstanding snow all winter so I have been classic skiing quite a lot and only skated a few times. I think if I worked on the technique more it would be more satisfying, I'm like one of those lunch hour lap swimmers who never improves a bit. In the end its a nice adjunct to riding the bike and running in winter, perhaps I should learn to do it correctly some year.
