The long:

This is my second ever tri. My goals?

Improve over last year - check!

don't panic on the swim - check!

Get under 1:45 - check!

kick ass on the run - check!

have fun - check!

Friday night, packed up all my stuff, laid out my clothes for the morning, filled up the bottle of gatorade for the freezer. Went to bed at 9:30. Got woken up around 10:30 because my son was throwing up. :( Stayed up with him for I don't know how long before I went back to bed.

Saturday morning. Alarm went off at 4:00....hit the snooze and got up at 4:30. Hit the bathroom, got dressed, and had breakfast. Was on the road at 5.

Got to the race site. Checked in, got my shirt and number, body marked and set up transition. Got familiar with the in and out areas. Came back and rearranged my stuff. Got a little light stretching in. Another bathroom visit and then to the pool.

Swim:

800m pool swim - down and back each of the 8 lanes. Start 1 person at a time at 20 second intervals. I was number 59. So I stood around for a loooooong time just waiting and breathing and trying to relax. My turn, I step down into the water waiting for my start. It was very very shallow. I know I'm tall, but seriously, the water only cam up to my butt. Ugh. I took off and tried to keep a very even pace. I started to freak out a little (I'm scared of the water) but by 300m I had really settled down. I opted to go under the ropes instead of over. I still don't know which would have been better. I had to go all the way to the floor to get under, and still ended up hooking my right heel twice. I was also scraping my hands on the bottom at times. Oh well....same conditions for everyone I suppose. I started to get overly excited with 100m to go and had to settle myself down again. Hopped out of the pool and ran across the deck to the timing mat - 17:02. (3rd in my AG) Sweeeeeet!

Then the looooong run up the bleacher steps, around the lockerroom building, across the street and into the parking lot for transition, which was uneventful.

Bike:

Let's just say, I'm not the worlds best cyclist. I just wanted to push myself, stay focused, and not lose too much ground. I was moving pretty well, until I missed a turn. I looked up in time to see the arrows as I passed them. Turned around quickly and got back on course (dumbass). About 6 miles into the out-and-back course, there were emergency vehicles. Ugh. An athlete was hit and killed by a drunk driver here last year. I slowed, weaved in and out of 2 police cars and an ambulance...and had to go off road to do so. I *seems* that 2 athletes got tangled up. Both were coherent and talking to the officer. Pedal on. Made the turn around and came back through the same mess. Quads started screaming around the 10 mile mark. I pushed on, knowing I could work out the jello on the run. 52:50.6. (8th) I was hoping to be under 50...and I think minus the wreck and the wrong turn, I could have done so. T2, also uneventful.

Run:

Ah yes, the run. Where I feel uber strong. My legs did feel jello-y, but not too bad. I was able to pass a few folks who were doing the death march. I didn't feel like I was moving as quickly as I was, but as I kept checking my watch, I knew I would make my goal. 24:17.5 (1st)

Total time 1:38:10.7

I couldn't believe it. 1:45 would have been a big big improvement from last year. I thought, "If I have a really really good day, I *might* have an outside shot at getting under 1:40, and maybe, just maybe an AG place." Never really believing it would happen, but its fun to think about, right? I know I can get faster, especially with the shallow pool and the bike issues. I'm so damn proud of myself. Now, I have to get ready for my Oly this weekend  But I'm crazy excited...especially for the longer run!

Thanks all for your help and advice. I've learned a ton since last year!
