RR another cross race

I got roped into helping a local team put on a cross race at a downhill ski area. They were unable to find an official for the weekend, so since I have my license i filled in but also jumped in the elite race. It was pretty hectic scoring the morning race, we have a new software and today was the first real test under pressure. It worked out pretty well. There is always so much to manage on race day, but it went really well. We had 25 kids for the kids race and my daughter also helped ding the bell for the last lap. Ended up 6th place, kind of a lackluster effort but nice to get out on a perfect day in the sun
 
course was dry and muddy at the same time

Nice work helping the race and racing! Did you have to climb the ski hill (reminds me of Xterra in Utah)? In that kind of muddy condition, did you see any riders DNF or running (instead of riding) with mechanical issues? At thie year's Iceman race (snowed the night before thus very very muddy), I saw quite a few running with the bike holding chain in their hands. 
 
Looks like your daughter is ready for her brother's orange bike...

we climbed part way, look at the last picture, there is yellow caution tape just over my head, it picked up maybe 300 feet per lap x 7 laps, which is a pretty good bit for a cross race, given we are running road bike gearing. we made the laps pretty long so riders wouldn't have to climb so much. The course had a lot of rocks so there were a lot of flats and some broken bikes, maybe 6 dnfs total and a number of flats. It's hard to find suitable terrain there, but they have a ski swap and ski jumping stuff that day, so a big party atmosphere, music food all that stuff, so a fun venue that people enjoy
 
My daughter wants a girl bike. Evans orange bike is pretty wrecked, i just got him a 24 inch wheel bike with gears, it's working out nicely, it's hard finding kids bikes that are not super heavy.
 
I'm glad it's over, I went from providing a little help to working all day and night as the official and half the promoter. If I see something not going right it's hard to walk away.

Looks like a beautiful day for a race - good work juggling racing and officiating etc. definitely not an easy task.

i had some volunteers working the finish line, they screwed it up. I filled in as official but wanted to race, i won't do that again. I really dislike officiating, perhaps thats why we have so few. Being a USAT official would make me crazy.

You'd think that officiating would be good punishment for getting injured in cross ;-)

i'd go nuts with all the dumb ass things I see triathletes do with a bicycle, no wonder they are so crazy about having everyone wear a helmet constantly. I think every single multisports race I have done resulted in my breaking some sort of penny ante rule related to bike safety. I let my 5 year old have more autonomy on the bike.
