<p>MAN this is so funny, We all have so many different stories, yet it's the same place, same day, same race.</p>
<p>I was behind you guys... but I was all alone <img alt="sad.gif" class="bbcode_smiley" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies//sad.gif"> . appart form the dust (man it was dusty) I really felt like there was no-one there!</p>

<p>Something happened before dugdale's I don't know what... I don't remember, just that it was going up.</p>
<p>but I lost all my advance (I was 20 minutes ahead and then, woof! just in time...). At Goodmans I was too late.</p>
<p>(Bassette was cool and let me go anyway, but six miles in less than an hour... well when I'm fresh, it's easy... on flats too...)</p>
<p>It was really tough for me because between garvin hill and dugdale, I was all alone. that was super long.</p>
<p>there was this guy, but he didn't seem to want to talk. He kept passing me, on and off and I felt like he hated my guts. <img alt="sad.gif" class="bbcode_smiley" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies//sad.gif"></p>
<p>Fortunately I ran the end with a girl called Gill, she had a problem with her knee. Man she could power walk the hills!!!</p>
<p>But we didn't make it.. they cut us off at Johnson...</p>
<p>I am pissed but still happy. this really was one of the best "millesime" in the VT 50.</p>

<p>Ya, that sure was a great day, perfect temperature for running and overcast, and dry trails for once.  Fabulous view from Garvin Hill!  I didn't set a new PR this year, but the course really seemed to fly by like never before, maybe out of familiarity being the 8th year in a row there in Vt. plus the parts shared with Vt100. Definitely a top event as you say SJ.  I had a grilled cheese at Goodmans too; awsome! I never see the race director Mike stop moving; when they got low on food and paper plates at the finish he was right in there digging up more stuff.</p>

<p>I met a kid at the pre-race dinner who had only done the Boston Marathon this year as his only long run and had no experience with how to eat or drink in a long race.  Zeke apparently gave him some electrolyte caps but he didn't know what they were.  I gave him all the advice I could think of before we finally had to leave the dining room; hope it helped him finish. </p>

<p>My Vt100 pacer, Kevin, not only ran his first 50 but came in just a few minutes behind me; he was really stoked!  His parents were right there to hang finisher medals.</p>

<p>I know people say you should walk them... but it certainly slowed me down.</p>
<p>I'd like to run other ultras too, like the white river 50, some 100 milers but I am worried of always being cut off now.</p>
<p>plus these really hilly races... you can't just walk the ups all the time? this would mean that you walk the half of it...</p>

It's not "walking" per say.. it's Power Hiking. If you're doing what some call "mall walking" you're going too slow. You've gotta dig deep and power hike those hills with conviction. Beyond that.. you run the downs and the flats. Give it hell.. you can only do your best.<br><br>
I do at least 2 or 3 training runs a week out in a place where I can run some gnarly hills or "mountains." Shit helps.

<p>I guess you also train for power walk hey? I'll get on hikes with my friends and familly and try that more.</p>
<p>but on the 50 I didn't feel like power walking. My hart was pounding...</p>
<p>Do you remember hart breaker hill on the VT100? Man I wanted to die on this one...</p>
<p>I had to sit on a stone so that I didn't pass out...</p>

<p>Hills slow everyone down, even the big guns. You need to find hills as steep or steeper, as long if not longer, the same footing if not gnarlier, and hike the hell out of them in training. Then on race day you can power hike the ups and minimize the slowing on the hills and still have overall strength to run the downs and levels.<br>
