I wanted to let you fellow New Englanders and any Maniacs in on this little secret marathon.
It was held yesterday Dec 8th at 8:30am in the tiny little town of Roxbury, Ct... Don't blink!
It has been run since 2004 and was posted on Marathonguide.com this year. In past years there had been 6-12 finishers, this year a record 30 signed up and I am not sure how many finished. It is an 8.1-2 out and back then 5 x 3.5ish mile loop. If you like rolling hills this is the marathon for you! I got there about an hour before the start at a balmy 24 degrees and chatted with a few people, the race director of the Lake Waramaug ultras, the race director of the Nipmuck trail marathon ( also held in CT), and a runner, Jim, who came from Fla just to get in his CT marathon for the 50 states... There were several other 50 staters there and 3 maniacs (I think). Mostly locals and really laid back group. I think the race director was a little uptight about the amount of poeple a jump from 12 to 30 might have thrown him??

At the start the race director gave directions which were good but it was a fairly easy to follow out and back and the loop. The out and back was nice some main road and a really beautiful dirt road. It was like the song over the river and through the woods. The loop was similar but a different dirt road. It was chilly and hard for my body to regulate temp as when the hills dipped down it got cold but out on the main road it was hot in the sun. Usually I hate loops but being as out of shape as I am and injured, it was nice to know what was coming, where to slow and where to speed up. I think I was a little hypothermic at the end but I finished with a time of 4:08:34 and was the first woman to finish/ 6th overall...put it in perspective though!!

Ah, water stations were on the out and back, and 2 on the loop, the gatorade ran out and 1 of the station was manned with a great cheery group, the other was self serve. water only on the loops. There were grinders and some treats at the end. I always bring my own drink and carry my hand held so this was not a problem for me but for others it might be. Plus, it was only $5 to enter, another draw!! What marathon have you run lately for $5!!

SO, anyone looking for a late in the year marathon and is able to come to CT, this little secret is perfect!
