It's been years (30 plus) since I've lived in Delaware or even close enough to be involved with my aunts and uncles there - but as a kid, I lived there and they were very much a part of my life.

Truth be told, our extended family isn't very close - kind of stoic really - about the only time anyone talks to anyone is when someone passes away.

Well.....

I received a text message from my Uncle Richard - he's just 2 years older than I am and my fathers youngest brother. His brother - my other uncle and my dads younger brother died Sunday. I received a text and then spoke to him briefly about it.

I received a call about an hour ago. The youngest sister - a mere 2 years older than my Uncle Richard (and 4 years older than I) - had a massive stroke today and will be removed from life support shortly. They're not even done making the funeral arrangements for their brother and now the baby sister is dead.

There's not much to say about it I guess - I spoke with Richard and my other Aunt - she's obviously torn up and is really struggling with the loss of her brother (she was his care taker) and now her younger sister...

I dunno.. not sure how to process it all.

I spoke to my father earlier today - his altzheimers is in and out so not really sure he's processing it all.

It's times like this that being a lone and 1400 miles away from my family just sucks...

So.. you guys get to hear about it --- cause that's what we do here, right?

My father won't be there - so, no - I'm not going. I spoke with the other two siblings tonight and expressed my condolences. There's nothing really good that will come of the trip to Delaware so I'll just send flowers and move on with my life here.

Thanks for your kind words and thoughts...

I just gotta process it all I guess... we all deal with it eventually, hungh?

rich,
Sorry that you and the family are dealing with this.
Yes, it is tough to process.
Feeling sad and mourning for the extended family is normal. To call them and give your sympathies was the right thing. Perhaps a donation? Ask and find out if there's something that may be appropriate.

Right now, however, your dad needs your energy and support.
My thoughts coming your way.

I'm so sorry Rich. This stuff is never easy and it sounds like your family got a double dose.

Just received the call that my aunt passed away - on her own. Her husband was struggling with removing her from life support - it seems she made the decision for him.
