I think I'll read the book that Band of Brothers was based on. I loved the series. Rest in peace, Major Winters.

Anyone seen The Pacific? Good? I caught one episode and it just so happened that I had just recently finished reading William Manchester's Goodbye, Darkness. It seemed like it was heavily based on his memoir.

BTW, my parents live about half an hour from the former site of Camp Toccoa. One Thanksgiving weekend, my sister and I drive over and ran up Sink Trail on Mt. Currahee. (It's a gravel road now.) I could not imagine those guys running that mountain in full gear. Unbelievable. I was in nothing but running clothes and in good running shape and it damn near killed me.

I am in the middle of watching The Pacific. I think I have one or two episodes to go. It's quite good. I think BOB might have been a teensy bit better.

I wonder why the European Theater seems to be perennially more compelling than the Pacific. If I recall correctly, many more soldiers and Marines died fighting in the big battles of the Pacific than, say, the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.

As someone who lives in California, whose ancestors fought in the Pacific Theater, I'd say that the Pacific is MORE compelling. I wonder if one's perception of the war (Pacific-vs-Europe) is effected by where you grew up.
As far as pop culture goes, The Thin Red Line was just one prominent movie about the Pacific.

There was a time in my life when I would've debated you on this. I once loved this movie and saw it at least twenty times. But, I can see why a person would hate it.

I wasn't terribly impressed with either the book or the movie, but for some reason, I have linked in my head The Thin Red Line and Catch-22, which I thoroughly disliked. And I don't know why I've got the two linked. I think I read them both about the same time in college.

I loved BoB and read the book over and over. I think part of the reason I'm more conversant with the ETO as opposed to the PTO is the simple geographical fact that I can picture a map of Europe in my head while I'm reading and and I generally know what goes where, so it's easy for me to "see" big-picture movements if I want to.

Plus, my family is European, so there's that familial link, even though we came to the US in the 1700s.

The family/geographical link really interests me. I wonder if I assumed the Pacific was as perenially compelling, if not more, than the European theater because of my family and location.

Anyways, interesting to me!

I just read Biggest Brother, a biography of Dick Winters that my Dad gave me for Christmas. In fact, I was in the middle of it when he died. I would highly recommend it. It fills in the gaps of details from Winters' perspective that weren't covered in the mini-series or the Steven Ambrose book. It also tells you about the process of creating and filming BOB.
