Morning, Ally..what do you have on the docket?? Fast and pretty to racers--easy and hydrated to LR'ers, or riders... :)

GOOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO Gramma's Peeps! Cindi and Baggs, especially. Who else is racing?

I'm out the door for 10--we'll see how this goes. Later I'm off to a b-day party that will involve overnight camping (if it doesn't storm). Man oh man do I need to get away. I am going to sit in lawnchair, margarita in hand and stare at a fire. Mea culpa in advance to those who will find me a bit anti-social, but a week of new student orientations will do that. (Right, Kris??) ;)

Love the FB profile pic, Maria. Your dad is all kinds of cool...stuff. :)

Go Grandma people! And Maria, and anyone else racing!

I did an easy 3 last night and an easy 5 this morning. I've been feeling a little sluggish today. Maybe I'm still a little wiped out from the trip to Vegas. Not as though I drank too much and/or stayed up too late. I'm too old for that crap. But it just seems that the traveling wore me out..

We'll see how i feel for the race tomorrow...

Hi Guys -

Done with #7. So frustrating to have good training cycle and not-so-good race. Right where I wanted to be at 8:30 pace through mile 11. Then just before mile 12 a cramping/tweak issue of my right quad (I have to look at my race report from Little Rock - I'm pretty sure it's the same issue). The cramping continued and I had to stop every mile and stretch it, which I was ok with. Stopped and talked to my family at mile 19. My miles were slow, with me stopping to stretch it but I was still ok with what I knew wouldn't be my ideal race. BUT then during mile 25 something really really sucky happened to my right knee (I believe IT band) and I literally couldn't run. I shuffled and walked and stopped and swore. Repeat. The last 1.2 miles took me like 18 minutes. I literally had to keep stopping and walking and standing still during the entire last .2 miles, in front of the gazillion spectators. Uggggg.

Thanks for tracking and the well wishes on FB.

Good runs to all.

Sorry, Cindi...I don't know what it was like in Duluth, but it was pretty darn humid here (85-90%) even though the weather was cooler. Reminded me of that meet-up year in Madison when I think only Maria and Voo raced well--no one else did because it was sneakyhumid--I'm not surprised you cramped. I hope your knee is not something serious--way to hang in there, even though it wasn't the race you wanted.

Hugs, hugs to you and we still think you rock. 7 MARATHONS!!!! :)

Supposed to do 11 today, cut it short at 9. Went out to late and just tired and oooggggyyyy and said, "Nah. good enough."

Hi all! Back from the post-run drinking and a little eating... what a great day! It was hot as shit and I was sweating like a monster but ended up with 9.85 mi with a tremendously awesome group of people.

((((Cindi)))) you are a warrior, nothing changes that! I hope you're enjoying many cold beers and icing-laden cookies!!!

I think Voo may have been the only one that ran well that year, it surely wasn't me.

Gotta see how Baggs made out, I hate when race alerts post the time of day and not the elapsed time from the start, I feel so lost.

Thanks guys. I'm still bummed.

Ya gotta love the mtec race results and what they track. When you click on my name it tells you I passed ZERO runners in the last mile of the race and got passed by 348 runners. How irritating!

I have been thinking about you all day, but my internet service was down. I ran 6.2 this morning and it was a warm, muggy morning (75 degrees by 8:45 am). I kept hoping it was much better up north. So sorry it did not work out again. It is so crazy that you can log all these wild mileage weeks, but keep having injuries on race day. Maybe next one you should shoot for 3:50 and see if it is any better? Don't know. It doesn't make sense. But sorry it was a crappy day.

Madison.Marathon.Sucks. But goodness gracious I wish I "knew" you all back then! That was actually the only year I have run the full and I ran with Lloyd's (rootsrunnner) group.

I am exhausted tired. And cranky. Really cranky. I just found out last night that my aunt, who has had so many health struggles has cancer. EFF EFF EFF.

The good news is that the boys and I are heading to Wyoming TOMORROW!! WOOT WOOT!

(((RFTL))) I'm so sorry you didn't have the day you wanted. I know how sucky that is. I agree with the others, though. You're still a rockstar in my book.

Hope Baggs did well and is happy with his race. Good luck today, Bob!

Yeesh. Well, I finished my 5 mile race. The weather was absolutely perfect for running. But I knew it would be a struggle anyway. I've been feeling rather sluggish for a few days, and I think I know why. As I've said here in the past, I was diagnosed with a mild case of sleep apnea a few years ago, and I now use a CPAP machine at night. But I keep it at home, which means I don't use it when I'm out of town. Since my sleep apnea is "mild", it's usually not a big deal, and thus I figure it's not worth the hassle to lug the machine around with me. But after time, it can add up. Well, I just spent 4 nights away from home when I was in Vegas, then I came back home for one night, and then I came to Connecticut for two nights. So this means I've only used the CPAP once in the last week. So even if it only affects me a little bit each night, I think it's kinda caught up to me after a week.

So this morning, I was just feeling really run down. And sure enough, I started struggling pretty early in the race. My PR for 5 miles is 35:47. If I were feeling great, I think I could beat that. And I even stayed ahead of that pace today for a little while. My Garmin died, so I wasn't able to pace myself by it, but based on the race clocks, I passed Mile 1 at just about 7:00 and Mile 2 at just about 14:00. But then the wheels started to fall off. Mile 3 was about 7:40, and so was Mile 4. And Mile 5 was a real struggle, which I did in about 7:50. So overall time was 37:10, almost a minute and a half off my (soft) PR. Oh well, I guess it's about what I expected from today.

Anyway, I think I'm in the market for a new Garmin now. I've already gone thru one Forerunner 305 and a 205. Both have had their batteries die. I think I heard that the newer ones have stronger batteries. Is that right? So what model number should I be looking for? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...

Easy 5 in the hoooomidddddd today. I was a bucket of drip and I'm not a big sweater.

Great work, Bob, even though it was hard...7 min miles..wow! I think you are on to something with the sleep/breathing, my dad has the same problem and recently they just gave him an inhaler for exertion and this seems to be helping him.

I have a 405 Garmin (no HR monitor) and I really do like it -battery life is good. Two things: it's touch screen so can be fussy when I have mittens on--click is better in cold, and it has no shut off so it always drains down. Otherwise, I like it.

Theia--Nonono. I won't let you say that. Arenotnotnot. You had a not great day. I was thinking about this yesterday with several friends who ran Gramma's and so far, none had the day they wanted, even though they all trained well. It's the frustration and joy of distance running--you can do excellent in training, but it's that one 10 mile or 26.2 distance that shows on the scorecard--it's not like the NBA or hockey where you get best of five in a series. At the same time, it isn't just one race that counts, but what you all do time after time and day after day that matters and other runners notice and respect (and that I admire about all of you).

Bob - what exactly does the CPAP machine do? Guess now you might end up dragging it along with you when you go out of town for long periods? Or not? Is it a big bulky thing that would cause issues in airport security?

Theia - I doubt that! we need more details!

Well, Wikipedia is the source of all knowledge that is good and pure in this world, so there's this.

CPAP stands for Continuous Posititve Airway Pressure. So a CPAP machine just continually pumps air. And I wear a mask that send the air into my nose. (Mine is newer and smaller than the ones shown on the Wikipedia page, but I used to have one like that). So yeah, it looks huge and uncomfortable. But it really makes a difference.

Sleep apnea often affects obese people. All the extra bulk can close up the breathing passages just enough. I, however, have a deviated septum, which blocks up stuff a little. The continuous air pressure helps keeps those breathing passages open. And I do notice a difference after a few nights without the machine. So yeah, it's highly un-sexy, but it works...

Will I now drag it along with me? Meh, probably not. I guess the next logical opportunity is when we take a week vacation to the Virigin Islands in August. At this point, I'm still leaning against taking it. I still don't think it'll be worth it. I'll be on vacation, and (hopefully) I'll have plenty of time to relax. So if I need more sleep to make up for it, hopefully I'll have the opportunity...
