First I thought this was an 8k, as advertised, so I had a goal for that and was excited to race that distance, something I hadn't done in a long time. Then a few days ago I found out it was changed to a 5k, so I waited until the last minute to decide whether to run it. Yesterday was very windy so I just couldn't decide but went ahead and programmed my Garmin for AutoLap per kilometer and set up a pace alert for 4:45 to 4:55.

When I woke up this morning it was calm at my house so I decided to go. When I got there it was 26 degrees and a stiff north wind had picked up. I went ahead and paid my 20 bucks since I had driven across the metro area and felt ready to race. I did about 4k warmup and actually did feel warm. I wore my Brooks Adrenaline GTS-7's, tights, long-sleeved tech shirt, windbreaker, bandana around my neck, and stocking cap (got a new one in the goody bag that's funny-it says "I almost won". It was an out and back I did want to maintain an even effort in spite of the wind, and I think I achieved that based on my watching my heart rate. AHR 176, MHR 181. But see if you can figure out where we turned into the wind based on my splits:
1k-4:55, best 4:14
2- 4:56, best 4:33
3- 5:05, best 4:34
4- 5:31, best 5:00 (I could see the whitecaps on the lake coming at us).
5- 5:40, best 4:25
This is based on gun time, which I followed on the Garmin, for a total of 26:37. That was a PR, but even better, my chip time was 26:28, a 13-second PR under much worse conditions than last month when I ran my last PR and got hardware. That was the only short race where I haven't experienced the dreaded dry heaves, which I certainly suffered through today. But I approached that race as just a training run. Maybe under IRC I could run my goal time of 24:10, but only if I psych myself out beforehand and treat it as "just a training run." It's a very tough field, which I expected, so I was very happy to be a mid-packer. I finished 80/175 overall and 12/20 in my AG, M45-49. The AG awards go five-deep on this race, so who knows, maybe if it's a good training run next year or the year after, I might get hardware.

I love being a runner.
