I was wondering whether the local residents might like to start tracking workouts on a monthly basis the way we have been (yaay, Tramps!) over on CR. Since we'd be starting from scratch, we have some room to play with less risk of the data-compiler's head explodiating.

I'd like to hear from you: Do you want such a thread, and what would you like to see?

This froup seems to do quite a bit of X-Training: I'd like to recognize that somehow. I had wondered idly whether we should apply the VRAA points system to x-training, but I propose something simpler. What if we track:

Handle
Month
Miles Run
Miles Biked
Metres Swum
Total Hours spent exercising (?)
What about just hours not BikingSwimmingRunning?
Monthly running mileage PR (Y/N) (?)
One-liner note (?)

This is just a starting point... please pitch in your own thoughts and suggestions.

My vote, but my vote sometimes is just a hanging chad

running forum = Track running miles. If this was a x-training forum, we could track x-training miles, but it's not.

When Tramps moves over here (and eventually he will), hopefully he'll bring his monthly milage thread with him, as he does an excellent job, although somebody subbed for him once and did a pretty good job herself.

I agree with Johnny. Of course, whoever would be willing to step up and track such numbers could certainly incorporate in the biking, swimming, cross training type totals if he/she wanted. I think though that as more people move over here and new ones join (it'll happen eventually), it would become a very cumbersome task to incorporate all the other non-running totals. But if someone wants to do it, then it's their choice.

I think your head will explode if you get beyond running stuff.

Then again, what do I know? I'm a wretched recordkeeper (unless it's compiling everybody else's stuff, like in the Weekly, which I enjoy ... weird). I haven't jotted down a thing since going on the DL.

(For some reason, this looks like a good avatar for Tramps. So at the risk of nitpicking, what about walking miles?

I know, this risks the age-old argument of how if you finish a marathon in 3:12 but walk all the water stops you "didn't really run it."

If I ever finish a marathon in 3:12, I won't care if any of it is walking or if the whole world nitpicks me!!

Anyhoo, I am really bad at reporting miles, but it is a good idea. (and that means miles run or walked, Hippo )

Good thoughts, all. I am considering Empowering Us All to Help Ourselves. Like this:

http://baseportal.com/cgi-bin/basepo...krmasters/main

Log in as krmasters, password "boomers" (sorrry. I'm a Masters runner who isn't a boomer, too).

If people were to enter their data like this, it would make life much easier for the compilizer.

It must be simple. If we want to track XT, why not just total minutes? Not all XT minutes are created equal, but neither are all running/walking miles.

So I would pare your list down to:

Handle
Month
Miles Run or Walked
Minutes XTed (maybe)
Monthly running mileage PR (Y/N) (maybe)

Folks should know, Mustang Sally and I have had a few sekrit e-mails regarding the Miles thread. She knows I’m “retiring” at the end of the year, turning over the CR thread to whoever wants to pick it up. The question is: do it here or do it at CR? Whoever will pick it up needs to decide. (I'm one of those people who seems to have ongoing technical problems with the KR site.)

I agree with MS that it would be nice to recognize more x-training efforts. But I honestly don’t know how to do that in a way that is meaningful, that keeps maintenance of the monthly thread simple, and that makes it simple as possible for people to participate regularly. Maybe MS's template is the way to go.

The things I’d hope we wouldn’t lose include:
--encouragement and recognition for all levels of runners
--plenty of space for personal reporting and commentary and reflection on the month
--some continuity as we proceed from month to month
--a sense of fun and silliness (this shouldn’t just be an accounting exercise)

Whatever you decide, good luck! (Watch your head.)

SS—Meh, kind of generic for an avatar. You’ve got me thinking about it though. ETA---done.

Well enjoy your retirement Tramps, and thanks for the great accounting job for the last few years.

In that case I reserve the right to change my hanging chad vote to:

"Whatever MS wants"

Grrrrr, I dislike being meh-ed. But I won't give up, dood.

Edited to take out Ronnie James Dio.

Good choice, Tramps.

I would never "meh" you. The generic icon, though, is too ubiquitous around here to be an effective avatar.

Back to our regularly scheduled thread.

Ronnie James Dio...now I've got "Rainbow in the Dark" in my head. Not that that's bad or anything...

My preference is just for running/walking miles. As some one who has been doing quite a bit of x-training, you'd think I would want to track biking and swimming. But I'm with Johnny on this. This is a running forum.

ummmm, new around these parts,,, but I would love to do this if it could include cross training, since I am not really doing any running right now. (hence, the reason I dont post much here) But someone might have to explain the ins and outs of it since I would be a total newbie to it!

But would love to participate if cross training would count!

Sierra, closer to the end of the month take a look at Boomers on CR for our November Boomer Miles thread to get an idea of what it is.

Hey Sal, I was able to enter some test data w/o logging in. I can see where this could be a real PITA to keep track of so I'll go along with whatever will make your life easier. I keep track of my x-training stuff in my CR log and am hoping the Kickrunner log will do the same thing so it doesn't matter to me if you include x-training or not.

Sorry to hear Tramps is retiring but I know the thread will be in good hands with our geek, Sal.

Thanks for the input, all. To be clear, the fate of the CR thread is up to those at CR. I can only get my head around the smaller population over here.

So, in general, I'm hearing that the running is the important bit, and that people value the opportunity to comment.

Does this mean that you'd rather post your mileage to a chatty thread than enter it in a table like the one I linked to? I lean toward table-entry, but that's just because I'm a lazy person. If the banter is part of the value, I can key it myself the way we have been doing. Keep those good ideas coming...
