My garmin is nearing its end. The HRM hasn't worked since early last season. It won't hold a charge for more than about 45mins, even after charging overnight. And I can no longer upload data. I've gotten about three full seasons out of it, so I figure I've gotten my money's worth out of it. This 305 replaced my 301. Son1 is still using the 301 which is still going strong, except the HRM doens't work.

Can you give me a good reason why I shouldn't replace it with another 305? Is the newer one that can be worn in the water that much better to warrant the extra cost?

I replaced my 305 with another 305 when it finally bit the dust. The 305 gives me no problems. You might want to check with Garmin and see how much they will charge to refurbish it rather than buy a new one. Although 305's are very inexpensive now.

I'm not into water sports and thus have no desire to wear my 305 under water. I can't help you with that.

I bought the 310 and the charge lasts much longer than the 305. Right now I am only charging it once a week with about 5-6 hours of workouts. I even left it on over night and it still had a 70% charge left on it (GPS was turned off so it wasn't searching all night). It is nice to be able to swim with it and not have to worry about trying to put a watch on in T1. However, it does not track distance while swimming since it only catches a signal while your wrist is out of the water. So when you look at the map afterwards it is all over the place. With that being said they have upgraded the software to try and fix the actual distance. It is probably about 80% accurate in the water. I have never had a problem with signal and it locks into the satelites much faster than my 305. I don't swim with mine unless I am racing. I use my old 305 when I swim outdoors, placing it under my swim cap.

The good thing with the 310, it works with all the 305 gadgets if you have them, ie HRM, foot pod and bike cadence. So no extra cost there.

Couldn't justify the additional cost of the 310 so just ordered a 305. Also a new swimsuit because I realized this morning just how thin my suit had gotten.
