I look at the temperature, 53 degrees, perfect. I let the dog out to the bathroom and that is when I realize it is raining. Oh no, it has been a long time since I have run outside, much less in the rain. So now the mind is racing, do I change what I wear or do I continue on and not worry about it. I decided to stay as is, long sleeve shirt and shorts and a running cap, but once I got outside I changed my mind and kept my running jacket on.

Before I left the house I checked my resting heart rate, 58. Today’s run was a “long run” of only 6 miles but I had to keep the heart rate in check. I set my heart rate monitor to beep once it hit 155, 65% of my heart rate reserve. Here are my splits and average heart rate per mile: 8:33 (143), 8:25 (150), 8:35 (152), 8:21 (150), 8:30 (150), 8:27 (154).

A great run as I stayed on track with both pace and heart rate. I normally just want to run and not worry about pace or heart rate, but this season I am going to try and stick to a plan for my long runs keeping my heart rate between 65 and 70% heart rate reserve.
