It's 5 degrees in Minnesota today. Snow is falling. I live in a rural area with plenty of trails and some great running routes. But, I won't get to use them for at least another month. Twelve weeks - that's I have before Dam 2 Dam. "How am I going to get in shape in just 12 weeks?", This is the thought I had as I started the treadmill at SNAP fitness. For the next four weeks, my running will be on the dreadmill - I HATE running on a treadmill! Add that to being so out of shape with 30 pounds of extra weight and its going to be a long four weeks!

I have about four weeks in which to build a running base before I can start training for Dam2Dam. 8 weeks to train will be enough but it will require a commitment to running that I've not had in about 5 years. I figure in the next four weeks, I'll need to drop at least 10 pounds and build a base of 20 miles a week with no pain and no injury. I've run enough to know that its 'doable' - but it will require me to 'remember' the pain of running and remember that the pain will subside.

Day 1:

Until I can get outside, I'll have to do this on the treadmill - I've actually done about 4 treadmill runs over the last 3 weeks; but it's time to focus. My goal for now is to simply run and see how it feels. I was able to get 2 miles on the treadmill today. Based on my recollection of the route for Dam to Dam, that gets me across the Dam and to mile two which is a down hill 2 lane rural road. There will be a lot of people in the first two miles - packed like sardines; especially over the dam since there's no where to go - either to the left or right. The 2nd mile is a bit better, but the runners won't really spread out until you reach mile 3.

2 miles - Wow. I'll take it - the pace? It doesn't matter at this point. I just need to do the mental work for now. After the first mile (getting across the dam), I felt pretty good. My breathing was consistent and I wasn't struggling at all. However, Around 1.5 miles, I could start feeling some aches in my lower legs. My breathing still was pretty consistent and I wasn't struggling - so I just 'ran through' the uncomfortable feeling in my legs. As it subsided around 1.7 miles, I could start feeling the struggle in my breathing - this sucks! But, my anal side said, "Keep going - you can finish on 2 miles".. I barely made it as I started clicking down the pace, but I got there.

Max heart rate at the end of the 2 miles - 175bpm. That seems high, but I know my running heart rate has always been high. Four minutes later - walking on the cool down, it was down to about 135bpm. I am out of shape - and my heart is reminding me of that.

12 weeks to go - that's too far out there. I need to do this one day; one run at a time.

It's 5 degrees outside - there's snow on the ground.. Soon spring will be here

Great job out there satfix.

You might want to try to do a run/walk approach. You will be able to go for a longer period of time and cover more distance to help build your base. You can do this a couple days out of the week and then do a continues run a couple times a week. Not sure how often you will run, but something to think about.

Happy training.

Sunday is traditionally my day for "Long Runs" - So, today is my long run - as it were.

Time on the treadmill seems to always go slower and more mental than running on the road or a trail. I don't know if it's because you're stationary and the scenery never changes or if it's just a complete mind freak - but time definitely stands still.

I am going to call todays run, "Rock and Roll Running" - that's how I kept myself sane and measured todays run. With Classic Rock on my Ipod. Jimi Hendrix started me off with "Hey Joe" and then a complete set of AC/DC - finishing up with Joan Jett. The reason is, well - simply put - I keep hitting the darned "emergency stop" on the treadmill! So, in an effort to measure my time, I just used music as my 'mile markers'

The first set - was at about an 11:30 pace: It's a long run day, so I have to run slower (not that I COULD run any faster in the shape I'm in - but I digress). Total play time for the first run was 22 minutes and 11 seconds - estimated distance: 2 miles. Songs for the first part: Hey Joe, Sweet Emotion, Remember Me, Back in Black, Have a Drink on Me. I felt pretty good when I went to my 'walking song' : Hells Bells. My heart rate was lower than yesterday; my legs felt pretty good - but I walked for the next 5 minutes and 12 seconds.

The 2nd set was 15 minutes and 47 seconds - at just a slightly faster pace: 11:15. The song list: Rock and Roll ain't Noise Pollution, Shoot for Thrill, You Shook Me All Night Long, and finished up with Bad Reputation by Joan Jett. Total estimated distance: 1.4 miles

I walked it out to "Do You Wanna Touch Me" 3 minutes and 43 seconds.

Total time on the treadmill - 47 minutes - total estimated running distance: 3.3 Miles : total estimated 'moving distance' - 3.5 miles. That's a 5k - it's the longest I've run in distance and time for over a year. So - Sunday is long run day - today qualifies from my point of view.

Max Heart Rate: 165bpm.

I finished with no pain and not struggling in my breathing. I've a long way to go, but today was a good day - and good enough to make me think, I might actually make it!

Today was my first, "I do NOT want to run" Day! But I did! I'm traveling on business - back in Florida. The weather is great, but the location for business isn't very good. So, to run - I did the treadmill again. I was out late last night with some of the other managers and thought when I crawled into bed at 1am, "no running in the morning!" - but, surprisingly, my body awoke and before I knew it, I was in my running shorts, New Balance running shoes and out the door to the Fitness Center!

I only ran two miles - but, it was a good two miles. Pace is still insignificant, but it was a bit faster than my last run. It was running the entire time and I had my Ipod playing music. How'd I do? Well, the win was DOING so everything else is extra! But my Heart Rate looked much better - maxing at 160bpm and it dropped pretty quickly once I finished.

I can't let my travel get in the way of this - and that is why I quit running in the past.

Balance - includes running now!

Today was another 'first' for me. I missed my run!. But the "Miss" has dual meanings: the first is the obvious meaning; 'didn't do it' - the other meaning:"regret" in NOT doing it! I was in Florida for a few days and did run Wednesday morning - but couldn't get it done today because we played golf. So granted; the option to not running was enjoying beautiful weather the first week of March outside with friends and frolic while chasing a white ball around a pasture - I still missed my run. My internal runner is starting to come alive. The guy inside that pushes me when the guy outside would rather just sit and relax.

Missing a Run - It's a strange feeling when it first comes back after being absent for so long. But, it's a feeling I actually like. I won't 'miss' my run tomorrow - I will anticipate it.
