As a surfer, every time out brought a story; some true, some bullshit, but there was always something to say about after each session. Every run brings a story whether it was the squirrel high in the tree who dropped his acorn in perfect time to bop me in the noggin as I ran beneath him; trying to run ¼ of a mile in the two minutes it took a train to ride 2 miles, and beat him to the crossing; or just the sight of a ruby red sunrise before a warm front passed through on a day everyone else would see as grey and rainy.

2. He was the stereotypical blues-man … an old black dude, trucker hat, playing slide on a black Tele. The place was wild for his three-piece roadhouse band. During a break, I approached him at the bar and gave him the usual white-boy blues fan bullshit.

“Young man, cut the crap,” he said to me, “I saw your hands movin’. And people come from all around to see an old black man playing sloppy guitar.”

So many things I gave up on because I thought: “Oh, I’m 25 now, so I can’t do this anymore” or “I’m 30 …” or “I’m 40 ..” I’m doing them just for fun now; and people are saying “Dude, you’re really good!"

Just wait till I’m 70! [Dr. Seuss didn’t write “Cat in the Hat” till he was 53!]

8. Great POTD, Rand. I loved your response to number 7 as well. Don't think I'd ever become an overnight sensation, but if I sneak up on a few people when I get older, I'd take that in a heart beat
