Steele County Free Fair 4 miler- August 18th

In my town of less than 30,000 this is the only road race of the year and every person in town who calls themselves a runner is in it. Last year I had been running just a couple months and was not ready yet. I have been looking forward to this race for a year.

Couple cool things about this race, you start on the highschool track and do a lap plus some (about 500 meters total) beforeyou hit the road and then the course goes within one block of my house. it was like running on my home field cuz I run these roads every week in my training, way cool.

All week I have been thinking about this race and my goal of breaking 30. Everything seemed on track until I woke up this morning and it was raining like freakin crazy and no way it is stopping based on what the radar shows. I hemmed and hawed on whether to bag the run. and the 30's group was about 50/50 on their advice to run or not run. finally my DW 45 minutes before race start says, "drive by the start and see how many people are there and then decide." As alwasy she is brilliant. I drive by and there are at least 150 people milling around getting warmed up. I figure no way I can be a pussy if this many people are running (last year this race only had 181 people)

I get signed in and only have 15 minutes til the start so I run about 3/4 mile to warm up and get good and wet as the rain is very steady..not a downpour, but very steady.

As mentioned above, you start this race with a lap around the high school track. Gun fires and people take off like crazy. we leave the track and head to the roads and I am on pace for a 6:45 mile. WAY too fast. I back off and mile 1 is 7:03 on my garmin, (I pass the mile marker at 7:10 so I am pretty close to the clock time) still fast but I feel good. I get to about 1.5 miles and my flippin shoe is untied..grrrr.. I lose about 4 seconds there, but get right back into a groove and mile 2 is 7:34. perfect. I am honestly not noticing the rain at all other than at times it is hitting my face so hard I am squinting a little to see.

Just after mile 2, I pass within a block of my house, unfortunately I find out later my DD has imploded and my DW cannot get her outside to see me run by, bummer of course, but I live with my DD too and totally understand why DW could not get out there.

mile 3 registers at 7:30...another dead on the nuts pefect mile and I know this route so well I know it is bascailly 100% flat from here to the finish. Again I am not even noticing the rain even though it has picked up a little.. I am in a running zone I guess. I realize at the finish I am totally soaked, but during the run it never bothered me a bit.

I open it up a little bit knowing I can can break 30 pretty easily (my goal) unless the wheels fall off. I pass the only 2 people within reach of me and stay smooth, all the way to the finish.

as i am coming to the finish some 14 year old kid comes flying out of no-where and blows by me like carl lewis...I thought he had me, but when I get the results at the end, he was not able to pass me until we got by the finish line. I beat him by .3 seconds...take that young punk!!

final mile is in 7:12. clock has me at 29.26, garmin at 29.19...I make my goal easily...

I did not feel it during the run really, but I was hurting at the finish. but it was good hurt that is for sure.

I finish 61/221 overall and 8/20 in AG.

I never minded running in the rain before, but today I think I learned to love it

Great Race Dom! I've done a couple of those races in the pouring down rain too, and I always seem to set good times in the rain. Way to hanig in there and git er done! [I had Sirius Sat radio in my rental car the week and spent a lot of time listeing to the Blue Collar Comedy channel; 103. They say git er done on there a lot ]
Dom:

Nice race buddy! Way to brave the elements. Now dry out those shoes!

Way to go.
Great report and race Korbel. Now go celebrate with a piña colata.
Niccceeeee!! Of course, you are another one who doesn't back down from a challenge--what's a little rain?--you run with guts.

GREAT work! And this was probably a heck of a lot better than that Torchlight heat/humidity duo thingee, eh?
Craney you got it, I ran a hair faster today and it was real tough, but that 5K in the heat was a killer compared to this for sure
Great job Dom!!! I knew you could do it. I love running in the rain, too! Sounds like a great race, glad to hear you ran.
Yeah, you are fast! Glad you decided to go out and run it.
Great race Korbel, and big time congrats! From what I've figured out, unless it's just storming with huge gusts outside, I really love running in the rain.

It's really great to track how much improvement you've been making over the past few months - you've got bigger things ahead of you for certain.
Dom: You did a beautiful job of that 5K. Good for you for getting out there in less than ideal conditions
...ah...when the hell did you get so fast, Dude?
Korbel,

Awesome job!

Now you understand why I tell people "Sure I run in the rain when I'm training. You never know when it's going to rain on race day. You have to know how your body is going to react to it."

Great job under bad conditions.
equinox as I was running it totally went through my mind...if this happens in the TC marathon...I am now certain I can handle it.

winter I keep asking myself the same question...I know I was never this fast when I was like 16...not even close...and running 7 (and change) min miles seemed impossible 12 months ago...crazy, just crazy.

thanks to all of you saying I am fast, but lets not get too carried away...I am faster than I dreamed I could be, but I aint winnin no races that is for sure.

I was looking at the results again and realized that 28 of the 60 people in front of me were 17 or under...I got flat out smoked by 7 kids who were either were 14 or 13!! young, fresh-legged little bastards.
nice work!! way to outkick the 14 y.o.
Nice. It must have felt really good to have done that after having doubts whether or not to do it because of the weather.
Great race Dom!!! And take THAT you 14 yo punk - Dom's the man... respect your elders.
Nice job Dom!
Your getting mighty speedy!!
Nicely done - running in the rain isn't so bad once you're used to it, but it sure blows to start off in the rain. You'd have done great at Boston this year - perhaps you're a mudder!

Good time, steady pace and a strong finish - now if you could only learn to tie your shoes properly...
Add me to your fan club here! Well done, Dom!! I'm awfully damn proud of you!!
