Well, this will be short, 'cause I am tired.

My oldest son decided to run this with me today. He hasn't done any training, but said "It's just 5k".

I was feeling a bit sick this morning. My nose had been runny and made me sick on the way to the race. So, my system was pretty empty and I really wasn't feeling like eating either.

We got there plenty early, parked and got registered. Plenty of time to drop our race shirts off at the car and get a little 1 mile warmup run in. The warmup run was a bit too early, but that is ok. We were standing around as the survivor race started and bumped into a friend of mine. He started running about 6 months ago (I started 2 years ago) and has lost some weight and I didn't even recognize him at first.

We lined up towards the front, but not too close. It seems that since this is a "non-competitive" event, no one really seems to line up according to their expected pace. There were many people we passed that were apparently planning to walk most or all the way and started in the first 50-100 ft of the crowd. That was a bit frustrating, but since my 5k PR was 2 years old, I knew that I would easily break it.

After about 1.5 miles, things loosened up a bunch and I started to get my pace down to the mid-to-low 8's. The first mile ended up about 9 or so after a very slow (10+ pace) for the first 1/4 or so.

Around mile 2, the tall buildings blocked my GPS, so I don't have any splits and the total distance says 2.88 (motionbased corrected to 3.36 so I don't think the course was short).

Watch time (no chip or other timing as far as I can tell) was about 25:11 which is about 6 min off my PR (WIN) and this was a great event that was well organized with great water stops (WIN) and a great charity cause (BIG WIN) so I don't think I will complain about the crowds

BTW, my 16yo son ran 32:11 with no training. Now he is talking about running a bit more often (he hasn't since we ran our first HM together in Jan 2006) and he went on a 24 mile bike ride this afternoon. Definitely puts this day into the "good day" category.

Good night.
