This won't be a long race report....

Perfect morning for a race. The temperature was in the mid-60s, sky was clear. It was a little windy, but since the race was in a residential area the houses blocked a lot of the wind. Plus, we finished with the wind at our backs.

I went out a little fast in the first mile (7:09). I feel like I fell into a comfortably hard pace and tried to stick with it. Mile two split was 14:40 (7:31). Mile three split was 22:20 (7:40) and I finished in 23:09. Wasn't my fasted 5K (PR is 22:47 at this same race last year), but is very close to it.

I am really pleased with the results considering I haven't done any speed work in months and spent a lot of the summer injured. I really can't wait to spend the next year working on speed. I think I have some potential.

I took first in my age group, so I got hardware!

Oh, and I came >>this close<< to finishing in front of Jim Ryun. Damn it all if he didn't pass me in that final turn to the finish. I didn't have enough in me to get past him. Next time he's going down!!

Great race, aphigirl01! I'd be encouraged too and you've definitely got potential! Congrats on the hardware!

(Like you, I haven't done any specific 5K training and mine last week also involved a 7 minute first mile and then a slow-down. Oops! But then an AG win too. )

You'll catch Ryun next year!
