Is there any way to opt <b>out</b> of having the smilies over there --><br>
show up when you're writing a post?<br><br>
i.e. if they weren't there, that'd be swell...

Under your Options Menu of Your User Control Panel:<br><br><b>Miscellaneous Options</b><br><br>
Change your editor to: <i>Simple Editor</i><br><br>
That will remove the smilies and you'll need to use UBCode to do any 'formatting'<br><br><br><br>

If you use the Quick Reply, then the smilies are no longer there... but if you click "post reply"; "Quote" or Start a New Thread, then the smilies are there...<br><br><br>
I'll look further to see if I can modify the system further, but my initial look doesn't reveal how or if it's possible
