If I show up on an old chrome-moly mountain bike, will I be slapped? Or is it more like triathlon, where a mountain bike indicates a newbie but is otherwise totally ignored? I'm okay with looking like a newbie, since I am one, but sure don't want to be slapped!

the rules say to remove the bar ends, take off all the pump,. cages, etc. If you can swap to a road cassette, good. If you have semi slick tires, pump them up and lock out the fork. My first couple years racing cross I used the MTB and did fine, I led the US nationals (old guy class) for a while on my MTB until I crashed.

Two questions from this:

 1. Lock out the fork? Bahaha!! I was planning on riding the bike on the LEFT. http://mbannon.webs.com/7-17-07%20003.jpg

 2. Take off the cages? Huh. So...no water? For 60 minutes of torture? Or do folks wear a CamelBak?

You'll get plenty of water from the mud pits. You'll be too pissed about having to ride for half a mile uphill with your cleat not able to clip in because you just ran through a mud bog to notice that you're thirsty.
October. Too cold and wet and miserable to go bike riding. Hey, I know! Let's throw some knobby tires on our bikes, bundle up, and go ride on a bunch of muddy trails! Wait, that's too easy...let's throw some logs and stuff across the trail to force everyone to jump on and off their bikes as they race, WooHoo!!!

Hm, maybe I should spectate first. I hate that kind of stuff, too. I avoid all the local races that are traditionally costume races or have other whacky themes.

I always admired Jock Semple for slugging the guy in the gorilla suit at the start of the Boston Marathon. Cross racing is a World Cup sport, it's pretty intense but fun. Here's a nice little film of some good racing action, these guys are so fast:
Just go for it man. Jump in feet first, you're gonna suck anyway (face it, triathletes ARE GONNA SUCK we do not train to ride like these guys ride they are MONSTERS of handling skill and power surges) so just ENJOY it. Because it is freakin' fun. You already have a MTB background so you'll have a massive leg up from where I started. I got pounded so bad it wasn't funny, but it didn't matter. Hell, I don't even think I was last in my first race - pure holdover from tri fitness and stubborness. Gimme a flat striaght section without a deathtrap and I'll pass all you bastards!!!

But it's really a blast

p.s. I carried water and drank most of it (and some mud) every freakin time. OMG it's intense.

LRR - only 30min for the Cat4 folks, at least around here. I don't think I could handle 60 OMG that's just Crrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaazzzzzie talk.

I found cross to be a great distraction and "back to the fun of it" for riding. You will learn to mount and dismount FAST because you HAVE to do it or BLAM right into a barrier. You will learn mad bike handling skills or you will splatter. You will learn POWER. You will learn how to go when it's HARD and then turn the corner and it's HARDER. And most importantly, you get to keep playing outside until like December when all your competition is inside getting fat
