This is my first posting in this race report forum and it's a copy/paste from Cool Running. So if you already read it there you are awarded one "Get out of Jail Free" card.

Ideal Running Conditions
Spectacular Montana Morning
This is my favorite local event and I have been looking forward to it all summer. We received nice long sleeved red t-shirts and cool red & gray backpacks for our $15 registration fee. The previous two years I ran the 2 mile event and managed to get AG awards with times of 17:38 and 17:40. Moving up to the 5 mile was a tough decision because I would’ve liked to done the 2 mile again for comparison. When MrChoover opted to do the 5 mile I decided to run with him. The 5 mile course is fast with a net elevation loss of about 550 feet. We were both excited to run the course as we expected to have fast times. My goal was 45 minutes. His was anything under 49.

Now the bad news. Yesterday I struggled all day with headache and stomach problems which were still present this morning when I woke up. I took some Tylenol for the headache but the pills promptly came back up if you know what I mean. Ugh. Not a good way to start the morning. So now the question: to race or not to race? I decided to give it a go figuring I’d stop if I had to. I also took some Lomotil for good measure which really seemed to help the stomach problems. MrChoover was dubious about me running but thankfully didn’t pressure me to stay home (sometimes he’s over protective).

We arrived at the start with plenty of time and decided to do a warm up before the race which is something we never do even though we know we should. We ran about a mile and that was a good test for my stomach too. I felt better. The course starts on top of the sandstone rims that overlook the city and is basically all downhill except for about a 3 block long hill that hits about the 4 mile point. The last mile to the finish is mostly flat.

Fortunately, I felt good once I started running. A young gal I met at the biathlon last month ran with me for a mile or so midway through the race. She wanted to chat a bit but I told her I’d have to wait to talk until the end because I really wanted to achieve my time goal for this race. She finally went on ahead which was a relief. Early in the race, I had passed a woman I went to high school with who beat me in last year’s 2 mile race. I was feeling pretty good about being ahead of her but then she passed me at the end with only about ½ mile to go. Darn. I really tried to stay with her but she continued to pull ahead and ended up beating me by 6 seconds. I found her after the race and thanked her for pulling me across the finish line.

The OA winning time for the 5 mile was 24:XX by a local male stud. That guy is all legs and wins just about everything. The AG was broadened this year which meant I was in the 40-49 and they only gave out awards for 1st place. People will probably complain about that. I finished 8th in my AG but not sure out of how many. I’m really glad I didn’t wimp out on this race. We had a great time, were pleased with our efforts, and got to hang with many running club friends on a gorgeous Sat. morning. Doesn’t get much better than that!

My Final Stats:
Official Time: 42:59
8:36, 8:40, 8:05 (really nice downhill!), 8:39, 8:54
My only other 5 mile race was 50:17 on an all-flat course.

MrC’s Stats:
Official Time: 43:10
8:48, 8:52, 8:29, 8:33, 8:51
Won't be long before he regularly beats me!
Thanks for reading!

Good racing choovie, your're making serious improvement. I have a feeling you'll smash your PR at your half next month, and I don't think mrchoovie is going to catch you for some time .
