I just did my first tris last summer and there is alot to learn! Yes, there is tri specific gear and many bike shops, running shops and swim shops will carry it. And of course, there are lots of resources on line.

I prefer the 2 piece variety (easier logistics for the port-o-potty if you know what I mean!). For sprint distance, you will likely wear the same gear for all three legs. I think some bigger (longer distance) events have more sophisticated changing arrangements, but I'll defer to those who have done them. In the summer, you most likely won't need a wet suit, but again, I'll let others speak to that since I have no experience with that.

My tri shorts are like bike shorts but with a very light padding (sort of like a layer of polar fleece) instead of full on bike padding. The tri top is basically a sports bra. Some people like to throw on a shirt and/or shorts after the swim. You'll see a lot of different configurations. There's a lot of trial and error to triathlon. But, it's so fun, so be prepared to get hooked!

(You can spend a lot or a little on this sport... budget wisely!)
