In this video, I did not know I was being recorded. Tracy grabbed the camera to snap a few pics, and actually started recording without me knowing it. That’s why I ask, “did you get that?” I just thought she was taking pics.

Eve was a rescue dog, who was found in a dog pound in Chicago on Christmas Eve 1999 (that’s why she was named Eve). She was brought to the Australian Cattle dog rescue near Champaign, and I saw her pic online. I fell in love immediately and adopted her in early January 2000.

It was obvious, that she had been mistreated and she cowered at sudden moves, didn’t seem to want any type of love, and tried to run away several times during the first month I had her. Any time I let her out to go potty, she would circle the entire yard, looking for a way to get out of the fence. It took a year, before she seemed to really get comfortable with affection and almost 3 before she trusted me enough to sit on my lap for an extended time.

With much love, she eventually got to the point that I didn’t even have to keep her on the leash at the park (small town) because she had no intention of getting too far away from me. In my younger years, I was still playing football and used her as my workout buddy. We’d do sprints at the park zigzagging back and forth and playing chase with each other.

I mentioned before, her love of fruits and baby carrots, but there was more to it. She also loved raiding my dad’s garden too. He thought the rabbits were the ones eating up his tomatoes, and green peppers and even hot peppers. Then, one day when we were visiting and he was out weeding. I let Eve out and she proceeded to join him and started devouring any ripe veggies and peppers she could find.

She loved going on walks, and even though she slowed down over the last few years, was always eager to go if she knew we were going to stop by Tracy’s grandparents, or our friends, the Henry’s (owners of Teddy). I took her everywhere with me and she was in my car on average 4 days per week. She had blankets and a dog seatbelt permanently installed in the car, along with a leash and doggie clean up bags, bowls, a toy or 2, etc.

I just wanted to give you a little info about her, since just pics didn’t seem enough. With her being abused before I got her, I felt a stronger connection to her than I have ever felt in any other dog I’ve owned. Thank you all for your support, it really does mean a lot.

Dude, those are awesome pics and the video is priceless. I always forget to get enough pics of my pets (ok, kids too) so that's a good remember that life is short and memories can be forever. It's great to be able to look back and remember.

Thanks for sharing!

I know your heart is still bleeding, but compiling these and remembering is a great way to heal. Pet's really are members of the family - whether or not you have kids is irrelevant, they still are "family"

Mike, that video is absolutely precious. No doubt that once she settled in, Eve knew she was living the good life with you and Tracy. There will never be another Eve, but when the time is right, you will rescue another dog and enjoy getting to know him/her.

If only every human and every animal could at least once experience the depth of love that comes out in that video! The joy you and Eve took in one another is beyond words. My deepest sympathies for the loss of such a wonderful companion.

it's really wonderful that Eve was able to experience 'redemption' in you and your wife. She didn't have to leave the world knowing nothing but abuse as so many animals do. Thanks for bringing her up with love and affection, I know she is truly missed. great video, reallly speaks to her deep devotion to you!

I watched the video and about 3 or 4 minutes later realized my leg was heavy, my Bailey sensed my sadness and had rested her head on my lap. The bond formed between a man and his dog cannot be described in words, but that video does a pretty good job. I could feel the happiness and love.

That video is precious. We have a rescue dog too, they are the best. I honestly think they understand that you have saved them from something. Ours is the most devoted dog I have ever had. I am so sorry for your loss. She seemed like a real sweetheart.
