I'm preparing a talk to give at the American Academy of Dermatology
next year, on the topic of skin care for outdoor athletes. Topics
include the treatment and prevention of: abrasions (road
rash/chafing), folliculitis, heat rash, sunburn, frostbite,
contusions/bruises/talon noir, blisters, subungual hematomas (bruises
under toenails) or lost toenails, insect bite reactions/stings.

Of course, the more photos the better, and the gorier, the better.
It's an early morning session, and I have to hold their attention.
If anyone has any great photos to send along, it would be much
appreciated! I would certainly ensure that no one is identifiable in
the images.

The talk is many, many months away, so even though I hope none of you
have the opportunity to do so, if you DO happen to have any of the
above injuries, snap a photo and send it along to me.

My email addy is rtravers at yahoo dot com.

Thanks a bunch!

P.S. The Napa Valley Marathon is on March 1, 2009, and the AAD meeting I mention above is March 3-7 in San Francisco. The timing works out perfectly for me to go, run my race, and then go give a talk!

.... and I don't know why I saved this photo of looney's compound fracture...medical people are weird

Rose--those are perfect! Although that compound fracture is likely beyond the expertise of dermatologic care...how did the injury happen!

And I LOVE the photo of you at the finish! Do you have a high-rez version you can send me?

Thanks, and keep 'em coming!

--Robin

BTW--the injuries don't have to be extreme! A sunburn, a scrape, a blood blister, a lost toenail, they all count. I fear Rosie has raised the bar too high with the compound fracture, and I don't want y'all fightin' to produce gorier and gorier images! Stay safe!

Should I delete that first photo? Wonder if Tim will pop in and re-tell how that happened. I remember he was running Western States (right?) and he fell while forging a stream or climbing a mountain?

RT, I have to look for the original of exhausted me... I think it is on my laptop.

Robin, I have a two-fer for you: ankle sprain and black toe! First image is upon finishing Gutbuster on sprained ankle (it didn't hurt -- really!), second is hours later (nicer colour).

I still think of Monty Python's "Cupid's Foot" every time I look at these.

Hippo has some profoundly gross foot pix - he was forced to withdraw them from the Dreadful Thread... Just ask him to PM them to you so we don't have to look again

Well, I never thought of taking a picture of my blistered and fallen off toenails, or my ankle sprain bruise, or scraped knees and such, but I promise next time I scrape, cut, bruise or brake something, I'll take a snapshot...
The best I can offer is my bandaged thumb when I cut off it's tip, but I can hardly call that a running injury... although I was thinking of running when I did that...just sayin'...
Sofar the compound fracture takes the cake. I can't wait to see the posts when the barefoot guys show up...
I had a beautiful pic of 1x2" blood blister on the heel last year (a rarity for me) but don't know if i can find it.

Most of my other injuries have been more of a mental nature

Maybe I can come up with something before time
Rosie should be fined for that photo. Someone call Ribs and see what it's worth please.

Ooooh, terrific idea!

As we head into spring marathon season, folks, be sure to snap photos of your injuries, small or large and send them along to me! It's all in the name of medicine, saving lives and all.
