I did the YMCA half today. I think there were about as many people as last year, but it felt kind of like a time trial to me. I focused on keeping to my pace; not a lot of energy left to worry about passing others, except incidentally.<br><br>
For my slow self, I set what seemed to be a pretty high goal of finishing in 2:15. This would be a new PR by 2 minutes, a PR I've had since 2003.<br><br>
The first 1.5 miles of the course is downhill. It's an out-and-back, so that means the last 1.5 miles is uphill. I knew I wasn't going to be going fast up that hill, so I tried to bank as much time as I could without going crazy. I was able to keep my pace in the high 9s and low 10s as best I could figure for through the 10 mile point. This gave me a new, unofficial PR in 10K (1:01:24) and 10M (1:40:00).<br><br>
I ran all the way up that hill. My pace fell to 12 m/m for those miles, but I did it. I kept telling myself I could walk when I got to mile 12. It was really getting hot and walking would just mean more time out in the heat. Besides, when I got to 12, it felt as if a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I thought: To heck with a PR. I want to say I can run the entire 13.1M distance, hills and all.<br><br>
