About 5:30 hally called, she had 2 bags of clothes to donate, THANKS hally. We talked for a while then she was off for dinner with the kicksters. Pam and I went to a local restaurant where I had some pasta. Then back to hers sister's house where we always stay before the big philadelphia races. We talked for a while then about 10 I went up to bed, slept pretty well, got up, took 2 immodium eliminate potty stops, didn't work, and dressed then off to Carol's to meetup with my running group before the race at 5:30, race start was 7 am. Carol, 72, lives within walking distance and always opens her home to us suppling gels, water gatorade , pins etc. very warm-hearted lady. Carol wasn't racing today but had planned to pace Connie for the last half of the marathon, more on that later. I left early to meet up with the BOMF group. Found the BOMF tent, left my bag with a few things for after the race. Everyone was there and looked ready ,if a little jittery. I greeted everyone and wished them luck and went off to stand in a port-a-potty line which moved too slowly. I decided to jog back to Carol's and use the bathroom there as it was now 6:41 and there were still 20 people ahead of me. Got to Carol's doorman let me in and I was in and out in a few minutes. Now 6:55, i rushed over to the race start got in line near the 4:00 pacer at 6:59 and then proceeded to wait 15 minutes for the race to start. Oh well this is Philly not Boston.

results short: weather low 40's cloudy with on nd off drizzle. 4th marathon 4:39:48, PW by 20 min, 1st marathon philly 2005 = 3:50. This year's result is not exactly what I wanted but I did finish and no injury but think I have to reevaluate my training plans.

Horn goes off and we are off, walk to start mats, engage garmin. Not sure what to expect from myself since I was sick for a few weeks before tapering. First five miles 8:40 pace felt easy, I wore the HR monitor but only for later analysis ( turns out my HR was already high averaging upper 150's my max is 180). 1st potty stop 5.5 mins long lines for the 4 potties. As I reached the front of my slow moving line, a nice young lady in the line next to me turned and asked/pleaded to use my potty, since 5" 5 people had already gone before her" I politely said "NO" she seemed to have already lost her grasp of the language and kept going on about using my potty even though I said "NO" very clearly several times, fortunately her potty door opened and she was able to use her own and I didn't have to "ECONO" her. Next seven miles about 9:15 or so per mile, HR in 160's, I didn't feel nearly as strong as 2 years ago but I still felt that I could hold this pace and even push it for the last 6 miles or so. Potty stop, only 4 minutes this time. next 8 miles paced gradually slowed and effort was much harder and new that would have to start mixing in some walking soon, HR 165. After 20 started walking and running, feet were very sore hurt every time they hit the ground, both knees were sore, calves were cramping up. I twas around this time that my friend Neil, of Boston fame, and I would pass one another. I was running faster than Neil but he did not stop to walk. We were both struggling. Last 6 miles were hard physically, mentally I felt fine very clear and determined to finish. Walked off and on and about mile 24.5 I started to walk again. As i was walking I came upon a young lady, Julie, who was also walking. I said " this seemed like a good idea 4 months ago" she chuckled and agreed. We started sharing a little. Then she informs me that she had to perform CPR on an older man at 10:30 last night. It was the first time she ever did CPR for real, she is a pediatric dentist. Her friend also a medical person was with her but also not experienced with CPR. The man was pretty far gone when she got to him and he passed away and the EMT team could not revive him. This sort of put our struggles in perspective, We walked and talked together tried running at about mile 25.25 but she was too sore and wanted to wait so we walked and talked some more. With about 3/8 of a mile to go we started running together, two wounded warriors struggling to the finish line which we crossed triumphantly together. We congratulated each other and went our separate ways.

After getting some nourishment including warm chicken broth inside the food tent. I went to get my bag of dry clothes from the BOMF tent but alas it was deserted and my bag was nowhere to be seen. I saw Mike who ran the 1/2 his first and he was beaming. He finished in 1:48. He had no idea about my clothes. We talked for a few minutes. I then walked the couple of blocks to my SIL, the weather felt a lot colder and a strong wind was blowing, the walk seemed a lot longer than normal . . . my pace that of a wounded slug didn't help any either. After I got to my SIL I lay down waiting for Pam to get back from church. She got back we went over to Jill and Mike's, our coach, for some food and drink and some commiserating. Mike, 52, did 3:09 but unlike last year, 2:50, he did not push himself. Also there was Carol who told us that when she tried to pace Connie she couldn't keep up with her and Connie just left her in the dust. Carol's friend Herb T., 69, was also there He won his AG in the 1/2 with a time of 1:39. he is one of the local FOF's. Neil was also there he finished in 4:29:XX.

I seemed to have recovered pretty quickly. Sun I was sore and tired. Monday morning I was a little stiff but not really sore except I could feel my calves going down the stairs but as the day wore on i was fine. Tuesday I felt back to normal. I am even thinking about running a small 5 K tomorrow.

thanks for reading and I probably will ask for some training advice in the next few weeks.
