I got a new drug…
1. What is your greatest accomplishment?
On June 13, 2005, I checked myself into rehab in Houston, Texas. I made a promise to myself that I would do whatever it took to not drink or use drugs again, and to never treat the people in my life the way I had before. Today I have been clean and sober for 940 days. I would not say it is a ‘challenge’ everyday, but I do think about it…everyday. I always remember who I was and how I got to where I am now…and I ALWAYS think about how to keep it this way.
2. Why do you run?
-I have two reasons…first off when I proposed to Tonya I weighed 285-ish lbs. I smoked 1-2 packs a day, I ate Taco bell at least once a day, usually twice and I looked like this:

I am down to almost the weight I was when we dated in high school…

-Second, which just happened after I started running, is that it gives me a new kind of high, it is my dopamine hook up every time I do it. I love hitting three miles because I know I am going to reach a level of clarity that allows me to relax and get in touch with my inner Phill.
3. What is your motto/theme song?
She’s gotta gold tooth so you know she’s hard-core. I love the Beastie Boys, so anything by them gets me going.
4. How do you deal with bad runs?
I have a lot of them…I usually just log it, think about why I love it, plan the next one, and shake it off. Lately with the ITBS pain it is easier to deal with because going into the run, I know it is going to be tough.
5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?
No, I try to make it as far as I can, and as long as I do not give up, or quit before I have to, I consider it a reward.
6. Who do you admire most?
I admire a lot of people, anyone who is strong enough to stand up for what they believe in. A person who step forward and go against the grain to say and do what they know, or at least believe is right. Charles Darwin, The Founding Fathers, Richard Dawkins, they are all around; sometimes we just get stuck only seeing what we want to see and it takes great people to show us the light.
7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
Your life does not have to revolve around getting high…it just doesn’t. There are other things that are way more exciting. ~ Anonymous friend.
8. What do wish you had learned younger?
I really, really, really wish I would have figured out how much I love to learn. I wasted a ton of money and time the first 2 or 3 times I went to college.
9. What do you wish you could do but can't?
The only thing that comes to mind is make enough money to allow Tonya to run professionally and not have to work…but alas…see number 8.
10. How would your friends describe your personality?
Silly and weird…I am a pretty private person when I am alone or with Tonya although she thinks I am weird, but when I am around people I am usually the center of attention…

11. What do you wear running? Favorite outfit?
I love orange, and I have at least one orange piece of everything. Tonya will not let me wear them all at once, as she says it is tacky…but I disagree…however I do usually only where one thing at a time. But here is a peak at the beauty that could be…

12. What has been your favorite race?
Freemont Turkey Trot 5 mile -- It was on my birthday and it was awesome, I not only finished, I destroyed my secret birthday goal of 41:00 minutes…and was very close to breaking 40 mins.

13. Do you have a goal race right now?
I have just started swimming and biking and I am going to start doing triathlons this year. I have a couple listed on my (Linked)profile below…but I am pretty excited about every race this year.
14. What makes you happy?
Besides being married to Tonya…

I also like music, cooking, crime dramas, and romance novels…
15. Tell us one (or two) interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
I almost lost my leg in February of 2006, due to a staph infection I got from tattoos. I have a full sleeve tattoo on my right arm, most of which is a green Dragon with a gold tooth.
16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).
Whenever Tonya’s mom was getting really sick and she was starting to realize all the pain she had been holding inside, and needed to let out, the daily run report group from CR was there for her. They listened and supported her more than anyone could have asked. Thank you, Hawk, Nirvana, Brown, Dan, KFuller, Flo, Richard, Mom, Chances, Ellen, Apple, RunAsics, Mailbox, Baba, Alex, Flounder, Megs, EQ, especially Dave for running in her memory… and anyone else that was there supporting her before I joined the boards. (Sorry if I missed anyone.) I could never tell you how much that meant to me, and to her.

And just for shits and giggles…I decided I would post my official weight loss pictures. Can you tell a difference?

"I am a pretty private person when I am alone"

Glad to see you don't converse with the voices in your head...

Seriously though. Great report. I didn't realize you went through all that. I can't imagine the dedication it takes to go from the life you were living to the one you are.

Phil,

Wow. Just wow. One of the neat things about these POTDs is the fact that we get a chance to "meet" people we haven't had a chance to converse with before. I had a few people PM me to ask of you were for real given the choice of a moniker and I assured them that you were the real meal deal. Your story certainly proves that.

Thanks for it!

It was awesome reading this. Even though we've met before I feel like I know you much better now. You've been through a lot, but it must be great knowing the best is still yet to come.

Phil, I love the all-orange outfit!!!

I run in state game lands, so I am always wishing I had more orange in my running wardrobe. Alas, the clothing manufacturers seem to think that women are far too dainty to wear orange.

Nice to meet you! and WTG on your weight loss! rock on!

Phil,
I enjoyed your post and love the Tats... Nice ink. We all regret doing the stupid things in life, however I think it makes us really appreciate what life is about. How sad it would be if we never made a mistake.

You are great.

Phill - I love to read stories like yours. You've overcome quite a lot over the years and then some, and it sounds like you've found a pretty good partner for life there. Congrats and thanks for the POTD posting.

BTW, I've bought this bright orange jacket from North Face recently and everyone just seems to love the color - wish I had known that orange was cool sooner

Nice work Phil!

It took a lot of courage and guts and dedication to come this far.

Thanks for sharing. Stories of how we all overcome whatever blocks us in life never get old and always inspire me.
