I know I posted a similar thread back at the Old Place regarding the Philadelphia Marathon, but I'm happy to see anyone and everyone when I'm over so I'll post here as well and see if anyone else will be around. Given that I have now booked my flights, got the hotel sorted and entered the race, I thought I'd start a thread for those of us who will be there in November.

This will be my Third attempt at Philly. So what I hear you say? Well, I will be coming from Ireland, and hopefully this year I will get to actually run the darn race. In 2001 at a Kicksters Gathering (pre-Cool Running), I was on course for a BQ when I had to drop out around Mile 14 due to a trapped nerve, and in 2005 I had high hopes but got injured a month before the race and by the time I arrived in Philly I was stuggling to run 10K, so switched to the 8K which I enjoyed immensly. So this time it will be Third Time Lucky.

For the record I am Bib Number 2057, and have booked into the Sofitel for the weekend, three nights, arriving on the Friday, leaving on Monday - although we will be staying in the area, as my SO's sister lived in Pa.

Now all I have to do is get trained for it. It's 12 months since my last Marathon, Prague last May, and I have been spasmodic in my running these last 6 months as my mum was seriously ill, passing away last month, so I am only getting back into things, and have put on weight since last year. I'm presently at 197 lbs and need to shed at least 17 by November.

My training plan is my usual 20 week build up, officially starting on Monday next. To give you an idea of my current levels of fitness I ran a 5K on Sunday in 25:48, and struggled. It will be an uphill climb, but I'm focused and determined, and whilst I may not achieve a BQ (3:35), I can break 4 hours if all goes well.

So, who else is actually entered? Locals and travellers alike - Lets get a Gathering Going and nearer the day we can plan to meet up at some point and have a blast - always a feature of Philly.

i am going to be volunteering at the aid station in Fairmount Park, at the top of the "hill." Unfortunately Fri-Sat i will be in Maryland for the JFK50M race. I would be up to meeting after the race in Philly, even if to just say hello! Or a post race b-fast on Monday.

Hey Liam! Long time no see! This sounds like something I wanna be a part of!! I think I could leave the hubby at home and share a room with someone - if I know anyone here anymore! I've been lurking lately. I don't know about doing the whole marathon thing (geez - that's a lotta training, ya know?) but I could come for the fun of the rest of the weekend. Or maybe I'll do the half. Hmmmm......I'm gonna have to think about this. But I'm a definite tentative yes!! ccasion5:

I'll be there. btw - it's the weekend of the 17th. I figure if you flew all the way across the pond and arrived on the 7th you might be disappointed.

Merigayle - what is this hill you speak of? And is that FL 50 you are running the Finger Lakes 50? That's out by Canandaigua, right?

Woo Hoo - People to meet, fun to be had. Thanks for the words about my mom passing, I'll dedicate my run in Philly to her. She never really understood why I ran, but was interested in it all the time. I went to visit her in hospital at the end of April (as I did every weekend), and she was surprised to see me as she knew the London Marathon was on the TV on the Sunday, and was expecting me to be running it!

Ummm Coach, I meant November 2007 when I went November 07, hopefully I do have my flights booked for the right day - We get into New York on the Wednesday, seeing some friends there (Divine Miss M? Are you reading?), before heading down to Philly on the Friday.

Julie, it would be great to see you again, it's been WAY toooooo long - And I'll let you bring Russ if you wanted, but failing that I'll look after ya

How's everyones training going? Have you all started a plan yet? Mine kicks off on Monday coming - And I can't wait to be back in Pa and meeting up with everyone - I sense a great time.....

well, i think it is a blip in the road, but have heard people talk about "the hill" which is why it is in quotes. People are funny. It is a generally flat marathon. The little tiny rise is good for your legs, use some different muscles.

Yes, it is the Fingerlake 50's, near there i think. Near Hector, NY. Ran it last year, was a good time Leaving in a few hours! whoohoo.
