I started 147 about 30 seconds after the first swimmer entered the pool. I was kind of nervous while I was waiting to get started as the swim portion is my weakest event. The lady in front of me said to pass her if she was slower and that she would finish stronger than she starts. I told her I would not pass her as I would use her to not swim to fast. I was encouraged by my family every time I hit the opposite end of the pool as they were taking plenty of pictures and as I made the turn I could hear them yelling. After about 75 meters I had caught up to her. She wanted me to pass her. I eventually passed her about 150 meters into the pool. At the same time we were passed by another swimmer. By 250 meters I was ready for the swim leg to be over as I was beginning to feel the pace was faster than it should have been. On the next lap or two I had two more swimmers pass as I was holding them up. And then again on the last 25 meters I was passed once again. My overall time for 500 meters was 10:28, including the distance from the pool to the transition area. I guess now looking back on my time I should have passed that first lady.

T1: My shirt went on relatively easy and all went well. As I was heading toward the exit of the transition I had three people in front of my. As we exited, all three stopped to mount their bike. I almost ran right into the back of them but managed to miss and passed all three. T1 time 1:40

Bike: I mounted the bike and definitely had it in the correct gear and was able to clip in relatively quick. My goal was to ride the bike at a speed of 20 MPH. I had a secondary goal to pass at least 10 people on the bike leg. Unfortunately I didn’t keep a good count but I am sure I passed at least 10. At mile 3 I was holding my speed at just under 21 MPH (according to Garmin 305 which is not all that accurate on the bike compared to the computer). I continued to push had as I reached the half way point I had pick up the speed and for the second 3 miles I was at an average of 21.8 and overall average of 21.3. During this three mile stretch I was passed by two and was beginning to feel it in my legs and didn’t think I could hold onto that speed the remainder of the way. I focused on the next rider in front of me and just focused on closing the gap. The third three mile split my average pace was 20.9 MPH. I was thinking, you can slow down you over your goal of 20 MPH, but the competitor in me just wouldn’t let that happen. I was feeling the burn in the legs and struggling to keep the speed. As I was closing in on the last mile of the course I had another gentlemen just fly by me like I wasn’t even trying and I was averaging over 21 MPH at this point. At just under a ½ mile to go I slid my feet out of my shoes and was ready to dismount as I came into the transition area. This was the first time I was able to see my family. My overall official time was 34:08.

T-2: I was able to dismount the bike with no problems. Made a quick switch to my running shoes and hat and out the transition I went. I was about 5 feet behind another guy.

Run: I passed him almost immediately out of the transition (He is in red). I was but maybe a tenth of a mile into the run when my right calf began tighten and he passed me. My goal was to keep the run under 20 minutes. After I made the first turn my calf began to loosen and I passed him again. After about a ½ mile into the run my legs felt great and I was able to pick up the pace. I began picking off runners one by one and must have passed 15 – 20 runners. I was getting excited as I continued along and felt better as I continued to run. I don’t know what my mile splits were as I didn’t set my watch properly before I started so it was still set for the bike and I didn’t take the time to change it to run. All I knew was at the half way point I was averaging just of 9.1 MPH. (Duh I don’t know what that equates to in pace.) On the way back I grabbed a cup of water and drank very little and wore the rest of it. Ahh did that feel good. I made the turn back in front of the pool and was pushing about as hard as I could and turned toward the finish with my family watching, my son ran with me for a short way until I hit the shoot (he is on the right in the photo). My run time was 19:43.

Thanks all. I appreciate all of the support that led up to this race. As it was my first and i had a lot of anxiety leading up to it. I do have plans in the future to do a HIM. It looks as though it will probably be next year sometime. Unfortunately I head to Iraq here in the next month or so and won't be able to train as though i would like. I do hear as though i will have access to a pool and some spin bikes and of course the treadmill. So training will continue.

I have to work on my strength on the bike. So I know what I need to work on while I am deployed. As I rode this entire ride between 52:16 through 52:18. Maybe next year I will be able to ride at 52:12 through 52:14 at the same cadence. Once I achieve that I will buy me a 53 and a new rear cog that goes to 11. Until then no sense I buy a 53.

Way to go Dave. It was fun "wathching" you train for this tri. A great testament to your competitiveness and toughness. Love the photo journalism. What's next?

Great run speed. Seriously, to pop off a 19 minute 5k after a hard swim and even tougher bike, that shows how strong you are and how your hard work in all disciplines is coming along, because it takes a lot of work to be able to do a quality run after getting off the bike.

Nice job, Triathlete!

Great job, Dave.
The swim clinic helped, huh?

You have your own entourage! Very cool.

1. YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE!
2. Thanks' for Servin!
3. I think if you can get even occasional access to the pool and bike, you can maintain. With access to some weights it'd be even better, but you should research bike strength related strength work which you can do with your own body weight (lunges, etc) just in case you cannot.
4. I think HIM is within your reach, as thor said, the very solid run time shows that the bike didn't destroy your legs, they're stronger than you think.

Good job!
