Oh, looks like I gave away the ending in the title.

Backstory
Ok, so this is my last circuit race of the year and with 2 marathons coming up in the next couple of months, I really wasn't expecting a whole lot. Plus, I was off for a month with an injury and have only been running about 3 days a week post-injury.

My previous 5K PR (28:46) was set early in 2006 after doing a plan that included a good amount of speedwork. I have done zero speedwork this year, but I have been running more miles per week. My last 5K was sometime this summer and I came in around 29:2x or something like that.

I also just found out I've been running in the wrong shoes for nearly a year now and got fitted with some new ones yesterday.

I figured on definitely breaking 30 and I was hoping (in the back of my mind) to get back in the 28s. This course has a reputation for being very fast - so fast that they make PR certificates at the end for anyone who PR'd that day.

Race Day
Wake up. Don't eat (as usual). Put on my usual running shorts, find a clean shirt, and put on my new shoes (which feel like the awesome by the way).

Drive to the burbs, park, pick up my race packet. I have an hour until the start, so I just sit in my car and watch fast people warming up.

With 10 minutes until the start, I line up near the back and then see my friend A. A has been injured and so, hasn't been running as fast as she usually does, so I take her up on her offer to line up with her even though I'm afraid that I am making a tragic mistake.

We finally start and I'm running with A for a few minutes and I'm thinking I shouldn't be going this fast and I will never make it. As we near the 1 mile marker, A is a few feet in front of me.

The clock says 8:20...21...

What?! Oh my gosh! I have never run an 8 anything in my entire life (that I know of). This can't be good.

Mile 1 - 8:30

I'm tired. Already. My legs are numb. It's an out and back course, so I'm seeing the leaders coming past now and I see how hard they're working and I'm just thinking Hang on, you gotta hang on, it's only 3 miles.

My breathing is horrible. As well as everyone that is around me. You can hear everyone inhaling and exhaling sharply. I've never been in this situation before; it's usually a lot quieter in the pack of racers I typically find myself with and I'm not usually breathing this hard.

I'm slowing down. People are passing me. I don't care. Just gotta keep moving my legs forward.

Mile 2 - 9:03

This is not a surprise. I knew I had slowed down. And, I'm even more tired now. However, I can actually feel my legs again.

People are catching up. A is further in the distance.

I'd love to do another 9 minute mile, but it doesn't feel like I'm going fast enough.

About half way through this mile, I felt like I might have a little more left, so I sped up some.

A woman who was not only breathing loudly, but counting as she ran came past me. I was happy she was getting away from me. Talk about annoying.

Oh, I see mile 3 approaching. Trying to speed up a tad.

I wanna go sub 28. I started out hoping for something in the 28s and suddenly sub-28 is a possibility. How did I get here?

I feel like stopping. I feel awful. I want to run faster, but I don't wanna puke. I don't like puking.

"Sprint" to the finish just behind the breathy counting woman.

Finish - 27:57.8 (9:01 min/mi)

I have never run that fast. I'm astounded. A takes me over to get my PR certificate. After finding out my pace, I'm thinking it would've been nice to have a sub-9 pace.

Then, miracles of miracles, A convinces me to go to the prize table because sometimes they go pretty deep in their AG awards. They base the number of AG awards that they give out on the standings from last year's race. I go over to the table and look at the chart and OMG, my AG is 11 places deep and guess who number 11 is?

Yes! Congrats on your new PR, Nettie! Way to hang in until the end, too. You can definitely go sub-9:00 pace.

Why on earth would anyone count while running?

Congrats on the PR and the kickbutt effort - its great when fast mile times appear out of nowhere like that. And hardware is always nice

Thanks everyone!

Perhaps I'll try for sub-9 at a race I've been doing every NYE if the course isn't all mushy that is.

Yeah, I dunno why that woman was counting like that! I guess it was some strategy she had worked out for herself.
It did hurt, but I still don't think I've reached my pain-threshold yet...which is a discomforting thought.
What's funny is how closely our 1st and 2nd mile times lined up! I will be eagerly awaiting your next 5K race report.
Really and fast in a sentence that includes my name?

Beautiful, fast, young and wearing new shoes. Does it get any better than that?

Congrats, roaring Nettie!
