17 degrees is just warm enough for the salt to start working and just cold enough for everything to freeze solid. My ace int he hole today was an old glass thermous with snoopy on it from the early 1970's with hot tea and sugar. Even my sandwich froze solid

Love it! Back when I was young and stupid, I'd take my Univega for spins like that. Now I wait until the roads are clear. To keep food from freezing, keep it next to your body (jacket pocket is not good enough!). Darned near broke my teeth last winter attempting to take a bit of cookie that had been stowed in the bento box.

ok, so the cold is one thing, but I see you have normal tires on. so that's not a handling issue?

the bike gets pretty squirmy, my brakes were not really doing much either so it wasn't the safest setup. The guy i rode with was on a track bike with one brake, his front fork was packed up with so much snow it barely turned. We rode much of the ride on snow covered secondary roads. Having a mirror is real helpful as I can keep an eye out for plows coming up behind. We use a real hard tire to keep from getting cuts, so they handle even worse than a summer tire.

So in all kind of an excessive day to ride, skiing would have been a smarter option.

Nice! Wish we had that kind of snow here, darn rains keep taking it all away.

Ron, I discovered last year that low low tire pressure(harsh ride but at least you can bike) is the answer to handling problems( just make sure you've got a rim you don't care about!). Last winter I was able to ride with little problem through 6+ inches that way, and in those conditions I like to keep at least 20psi in the tire but any more than 40 and I find it impossible to put any power down.
