This was my first ever T-man sprint. The past three years I have done the 70.3 so I was much more relaxed and mellow about heading off to Ellacoya State Park this year. It was perfect weather - high 60s/low 70s and partly sunny.

The Numbers:

.33 mile swim: 10:34 1:49/yd 712/1069OA

T1: 2:29

15 mile bike: 1:00.01 15mph avg. 770/1069OA

T2: 2:15

3 mile run: 26:21 8:47pace 707/1069OA

Total time: 1:41:40 702/1069OA 72/124 AG W40-44

Knowing that traffic heading into Ellacoya could get backed up pretty early I decided to play it safe and planned to arrive at the park by 5am. This meant I had to leave my house by 3:45am. That is the earliest I've ever left for a race. Very stupid early. I did arrive by 5 after a coffee/bathroom stop and scored a decent parking place next to the finish chute.

I hung out for a while, watched the sun rise over the lake which is always beautiful, visited the large bank of porto potties and got myself set up. Did a short warm up on the bike and then found my cycling buddy Fran. We did a nice swim warm up together and then had to wait and wait for our waves.

I headed out in wave 8 and after wading out into chest deep water at the start buoy I realized that I was in front so I stayed as far to the left as possible and had clear swimming the entire way. It was strange to be able to see the bottom of the lake for the entire swim as it was so shallow. The weird thing was as I passed the last buoy people were already standing up and walking to shore in waist deep water instead of swimming in.

Given that I've done no swim workouts in the month before the race I was happy with my time.

Ran through T1 as fast as possible and got out on the bike. Times for both T1 and T2 were the fastest I've ever had at Timberman and the transition area hasn't gotten any smaller.

I wanted to get through the bike in 60 minutes or less. Missed that by 1 second. I'm still slow on those dang Gilford hills. Some day I'm going to break through the 16mph barrier on this course. I did hammer the downhills which was fun. Compared with the 70.3 the course was crowded and there were lots of ladies of all sizes and shapes out on a variety of bikes. That was very cool.

Ran through T2 as fast as possible and didn't trip on the stupid curb on the way to the rack.

Headed out on the run feeling rather slow and I tried to push harder. My stomach and shoulder cramped up a bit but I kept at it thinking I was going to have a super slow time. Grabbed a cup of gatorade and kept going. After the turn around the course had a slight down hill and I picked up my pace and held it all the way to the finish.

Time: 26:21 pace 8:47???!!! Wow! I had run a heck of a lot faster than I thought I was running. This was my fastest tri run ever! Woot! It was even faster than my best stand alone 5K time of 27:39 I am very pumped about this run.

Post race I hung out with my friend Fran and her son. They didn't know about the free post race cocktails and were totally excited to have margaritas at 9:30am. Then we hit the food tent and stayed for the awards.

It was great to meet Kyle but I was bummed to miss Dougie Fresh and other members of Team LIT.

Hmmm... Black Fly. It's still an Endorfun event, great venue, and easier/shorter drive for me. Swim is a little cramped but bike and run course are great. Lots of lodging within walking distance of start. Fewer people but still competitive. I'm considering signing up for the "Lord of the Flies" next summer.

Timberman has a special place in my heart b/c of my finishing 3 HIM's there but the logistics/cost are a bit more to deal with.

Cocktails at 9:30am!???? Way to Go! I mean, great race!! Especially the best 5K during a tri race after the hilly ride - that is just AWESOME! Congrats on the solid race.

WTG!!!!!!!!!! Awesome job on the swim and RUN!!!! Woohoo, you have gotten soooooo much faster! Liking the shorter distances, eh? The last couple seasons I have only done sprints & olys and I love it. Training is still great but much for manageable with work/family/life.

So proud of you!

Nice job out there. It was an ideal day, wasn't it? I am bummed that I missed you that day too. Once I finished and was handed my children, all bets were off at finding anyone or anything other than ice cream and the bouncy house :).

I guess I should write an RR too.
