Hello all!

Fair Warning! I'm ashamed at how long this really is! Fair Warning!
Cumberland Fall Colors Half
Temperature: 50*F to 55*F
Goal: To finish
Time goal: Conservative 2:30
Possible 2:20
The Icing on the cake 2:15

I slept well and lazed around in bed until 8:13 am. The half wasn't to start until 9:40am and I knew if I got up any earlier I would have started to pace and second guess myself so instead I just daydreamt the morning away.

I've had great success with all my long training runs and I wanted this to be the same so I kept everything as close to how I usually do things as possible. With one exception. I ate breakfast. Two peanut butter with strawberry jam toasts.

I wore the same Cotton AC/DC shirt that I always do on long runs, even though i bought a new tech shirt for the occasion. It just felt right and I have no regrets about it. I carried Strawberry/kiwi gatorade, my car key, my Ipod, my ventolin (which i did not use), my sports beans, 2 kleenex, and my Garmin Forerunner. All in my fuel belt. It has always worked why would I change a thing.

The race is only 7-8Ks away from my house so I left at 8:45. Plenty o time. Just to give you an idea of the colors out there, here is a pic of the parking field. Check out the trees behind.

I got my timing chip and cheered on the 1K turkey trotters. Cuties all! Then off to line up. This event has a walking category as well so I lined up near the end knowing I wouldn't be last when the end came near. And we are off.
Once around the Cumberland Museum grounds and out onto the road. I, typically run in very tight suburban neighborhoods. This is not that. It is all farm land and big estate lots. Beautiful houses. But don't ask me anything about them. I didn't see them. I was too busy looking at the road and the people.

The first 4 miles were what I thought would be the toughest part of the whole race. It is all uphill. Gradual. But uphill none the less. I was going slow I thought. My breathing was fine. I was doing ok.

Mile 1--9:40
Mile 2--9:56
Mile 3--10:00
Mile 4--9:59

I don't pace very well. I run by feel. Usually, my average pace for a long run is 10:20/mi. I wasn't looking at the Garmin. I didn't want to psych myself out.

At the 4 mile mark, I got a nice boost when I spotted my 3 boys and my husband on the side of the road. Only they didn't see me until I was already past.
They followed me somewhat and kept popping up along the route.

So this is where i thought it was going to start to get a little easier, but the freakin' bastage hills kept coming. And coming. But that's ok because my tunes were kicking in and the Ipod God was on my side because he played all the music that reminds me of the special people who were waiting to hear how this was all going. Revival, The Way I Am, Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now, Closer to Fine and others.

Mile 5--10:07
Mile 6--9:53
Mile 7--9:52

At this point i know i'm half way done, and i'm doing fine. So it's time to let loose and start to look around me and enjoy the scene. Georgeous! Wonderous! Multicolored Spectacular! Enough of that! I want home.

Mile 8--10:22 more freakin' bastage hills
Mile 9--9:54

We are going downhill now. But still there are hills to climb! Damn Hilly course! crap!

Mile 10--10:17
Mile 11--10:34

At this point i'm in new territory. 11 miles is the longest distance I've ever covered and I look down at my Garmin. HOly Shit! I'm cruising overall! 1:50:36?! That's 6 minutes faster than i've ever done it before. Then I realize that if I push it I could, potentially, get near the 2:15 mark.

Mile 12--9:56
Mile 13-- 11:06!!!! I'm dying! I'm dying! I'm dying! but i'm almost done so I'm hanging on! Crap! Crap! Crap! Cowboy the fuck up! Get comfortable with Uncomfortable! I'm still dying.

The course was long by my garmin by .24miles,
and the stupid turnaround that had to happen at about 1/2 a mile out really pissed me off. I was out of juice and pushing it.

so the remainder .34 miles --8:09/mi

Total according to my garmin is 2:14:22 for 13:35 miles.

So the icing on the cake is mine for my first Half Marathon.

Plus my cheering section is going to be taking me out for Steak Tonight! How cool is that?!

Congratulations Winter!!! It sounds like you did well and will get better from here.

Sooner or later we'll probably cross paths at one of these things. Ottowa looks awesome, though I'm not sure I can afford it with my Yankee pesos.

Yea, winter! That is so awesome, woman. I so want to be you when I grow up; you have your head on straight, you have an awesome sense of humor, and you smash all time goals, regardless of how uncomfortable you feel. Reward yourself big time for this kick-ass accomplishment. I'm sooooo proud!
