And then the boys are home. One finished his last exam today and schlepped off in the snow for some Bagels to bring home. At least, I hope he's bringing them home. He'd better bring them home...

The other is in the exam room at 9 tomorrow, and will throw things into a suitcase and head for the airport once he's done.

I miss them. I do.

McGill boy: "Dad, you weren't kidding about the snow... but THEY CLEAR THE STREETS! (real amazement in his voice)" Calgary doesn't. Ever.

I thought it was UVic.

Yeah I was shocked at the lack of snow clearance in Calgary. Quite a few years ago I remember people saying that you don't need to worry as the Chinook will come through soon....yeah, like in 10 days. The packed snow in the back lanes was 3 feet thick.

They used to put up snow fences. You recall our place has a lane that basically runs along the green space. There's a park that straddles our road as well. When they stopped putting them up 3 years ago (Cost savings: 400k) they saved, um, -600k city wide. They had to plough the laneways and send emergency ploughs to clear 4 foot drifts across the roads. And then there was last year when our neighbourhood was snowed in for the weekend and it took 40 of us to dig through a 50 foot drift about 6 feet high at the highest.

Oby at McGill just called. He's packed. He's bored. Everyone in the dorm is studying and he's just wanting to get home. Nothing spells trouble like a bored college student.

Well, they'll all be home by midnight. Tree is up, no decorations on it. Fridge is stocked with yummies. Looking forward to this.

My Marine (DS) should be home by Christmas or shortly after that after seven months on a ship. Haven't seen him since last Christmas and I sure do miss him. DD is only 40 minutes away and we're lucky to see her most weekends.

This may be the first time I'm legit excited to be coming home. Probably having much to do with it being my longest stretch away from home (yes, I'm still a baby kenyan) and I've been in purgatory and 2 time zones away the whole time. Being a first year workaholic (sort of) adds a little different perspective too.

The only other time when I really would have been excited was winter break over freshman year as well, but that was at the height of family drama and I knew I'd be walking into WW3 (which I was), so that was a bit different. Perhaps I'm just making up for lost time?

They're baaaack! The flight from Victoria was delayed 2 hours so we got home in the wee hours. After parking the car I entered to the strains of music pounding from the pianna and the sight of the other OBY chowing down on ma's cooking. A full house again.
