Is anyone doing the Masters' One Hour Postal Swim? My masters team is really lame and wasn't planning it, but I ran into an old friend on a different team and she invited me to join a group from her team in doing the 1 HR next weekend. I'm thinking about it, but it might be tough... I have a 17 mile run scheduled the day before. Haven't been training with long sets either.

Postal swims are when you swim the time/distance/event/whatever...
with a "proctor" if you like...
then, send in your results through the mail.
Then, someone collects them, collates them, and you see who "wins."

I've never done one, but they sound like fun.

Yep....
a virtual swim meet.

usually they are distance events, it seems.

There's a postal "check off" meet...where you submit your times for EVERY event that could be run in a meet. You have a set period of time to do it, too...usually a month.

There's this man that always shows up to our local master's meet. He's in the 85-59 age group....he might be aging up this year...dunno.

Anyway.....he does the distance races and some backstroke races. He starts the Freestyle ones from a dive off the blocks, too.

I'm impressed. One year, he, his son, and his granddaughter all came to the same meet and competed together. It was soooo cool.

Just browsing my local Masters website and came across this world record just set by Maine Masters for the 200M free relay.

http://www.greatbaymasters.org/07PortsWR.html

Sheesh ... Nice to know there's SOMETHING I might be able to do at that age. Kudos to them.

why don't we all do a 1 hour or half hour postal this month & post. you are supposed to have someone else observe and count for you but for the KR 1 hour/1/2 hour we could be on the honor system. Its raining hard so I'll be in the pool the rest of the week, I need some motivation!

I am in for that

One thing we did at the tri club a couple of years ago was to do a couple of 1/2 hr swims a couple of months apart We then had a competition not to see who swam the furthest but who improved by the highest percentage

If everyone wants to do it, why not sign up for the postal meets and do it that way, too?

You can do it as "unattached."

I'd have to check my most recent Swimmer mag, but you might not need a USMS number to do it, either. [edit]<-- I was wrong...you do have to be a registered USMS swimmer. But, for a sample of the forms that they use, you can go to: http://www.usms.org/longdist/ldchamps.php#swimmerinfo Pace charts and recording sheets are there..... that might be something you could use for recording results. [/edit]

They also have "checkoff" meets that are postal. You are on the honor system, but during the course of a year, you check of each of the events in a swim meet. There are some cool shirts that have been created for these types of events.

Anyone who ever did the "Court Street Shuffle" in Athens, Oh...... remember those shirts? The swim checkoff events are similar.
