The Gravedigger, the Lady-Runner and Zippy, the Dog.

During my run on a trail yesterday, I came upon a man carrying a shovel. He was aimlessly wandering. Then, a loose dog came galloping up to me.

Shovel man shouts "is this your dog?" I said no, yadda yadda.

I called the phone number on the dog tag and talked with the owner to make arrangements on reuniting her with Zippy. Meanwhile, shovel man is hovering around while I lamely had my back to him, while wrangling Zippy.

I finally got my head straight enough to tell the man to keep a distance between us and that I'd take care of the dog and thank you, have a nice afternoon.

He got all offended. "I'm a good guy!"

"I understand. Thank you. I'll take care of the dog. Keep your distance."

I have no idea why this guy was wandering around with a shovel. I'm sure he was a "good guy." But don't shovel-carrying dudes, in isolated areas, realize that they may seem mildly threatening?

Forgot to add:

Later my mom said, "oh, you were in the same area where those two girls were murdered and left in the creek, years ago."

Yeah, so I'll be running closer to civilization now.

I had a coyote run parallel to the trail i was on (watching me the whole time) for about 50 yds. He then sped up and got on the trail ahead of me and continued to trot along, looking back to check on me on occasion, for another 100 or so yards. He then exited stage left and moseyed of into the woods. It was quite cool. I almost got run over by a small herd of deer on the same trail a different time.

Newts.

When I USED to run.. We had had some rain that week, I went down a road under the power lines and just in that area on about 100 feet the road was cover with many many red eff's ... mostly dead.. It inspired a weird little short story I called "Belinda and the Suicidal Newts ." Good band name eh ?

Shovel? Meh, sounds like an ok guy to me. Now if he were carrying a rake? *shudder*

I almost got run over by a deer once. It was the end of twilight and I was trying to squeeze my run in without a light. When, out of nowhere, I hear a noise coming from in the street. As I'm hearing this, a deer runs ~2 feet in front of me. I was trying to figure out how I would explain the cuts and bruises if it had hit me.

I've gotten punched in the face by a homeless lady while running.

She was standing in the middle of the street yelling at cars so as I passed her- I told her politely to get off the road.

She starts racing after me. I stop running and turn to her. She starts yelling swears at me! An indecipherable stream of obscenities.

"Look!" I said "I just didn't want you getting hit by a car."

She drew back and punched me in the face.

"What was that for???" I asked.

My only answer was another stream of obscenities.

"Well..." I say seeing the crowd that has gathered to watch the commotion "You punch like a girl." and turn to continue my run. I go three steps and I hear a voice from the back of the crowd "Trouble with the wife, eh?"

Not necessarily odd, but more cool

Arrived at my front doorstep after my run yesterday and was stretching out. I was holding a stretch when I noticed a stirring in the tree in my next door neighbor's tree. There was a stir of piercing whistles, and then one single bird (I think it was a sparrow) darted from the tree right in my direction toward the rosebush in front of me. The bird was pretty much right in line-of-sight with me, but I think the rosebush hid my presence.

In the next half-minute or so, a dozen or so of these birds joined their partner and swooped down towards me into the roses. For the next couple minutes, I held still as a statue while I watched them dance within and around their flower feeding ground, whistling their pleasure while they fed.

Then one of the buggers darted to another flower plant that was to the side of me and finally figured out they were being watched. He let off a few warning whistles and headed back to the tree of origin; soon enough, his friends one by one hurried back as well. All except one straggler, who seemed to be too much into his feeding for about minute or so. Then I think he realized that his buddies had gone, let out several seemingly quizzical whistles, and finished off the retreat.

Only thing I wish is that I had a camera and/or camcorder handy to capture some of this.

Nto while running, but while riding. I was riding down the bike path when up ahead I saw a guy running with two rather large dogs. As I got closer I was about to yell at the guy to call his dogs so I could pass. That's when I realized they weren't dogs. They were deer. I slowed way down. Eventually the deer darted off the bike path. As I passed the runner I said to him "Did you see that?!" And he said back "Did you see that?!" Not every day that you share a run with two deer!

Another... while running a local metro park trail last summer I encountered a young couple with a baby in a stroller pushed by mom and a young but full grown boxer supposedly being held by dad. I gave a wide berth due to locking eyes with Fido but as I passed he lunged at me. Dad obviously didn't have full control... Fido bit me high up on left hamstring and nearly ripped the left leg off my shorts. I gave dad a verbal beatdown and kept going - I wasn't feeling any pain due to the adrenaline rush. When I got back to truck I could tell it was bleeding but not badly. He definitely broke the skin but didn't remove any chunks....

The strangest thing that happened to me while running was being approached by what I assume was a prostitute who asked me for money.

She was dressed in only a raincoat.

Unfortunately I left my money at home.

I have deer issues almost every morning. Sometimes they just watch me run by, sometimes they will jump out in front of me. If there happens to be a car around (which rarely happens that early), I just stop...because a driver is going to see the deer jump in front of him, and he's not going to see me, and if he swerves my way...I'm pretty much toast.

1979 I was pretending to be a jogger one eve [after dark] in a *residential neighborhood near our apartment.

I saw a frumpy white dude, early 20s?, dressed in 'regular guy' kind of clothing...walking/staring/stopping...kind of following me, it seemed.

After 15 min, I realized that he WAS following or stalking me.

I stopped under a streetlight, spit, stretched and waited.

He approached.

I turned and spit again...faced him up and started rippin' him a new one with all sorts of 'effin' laced in my language.

I then turned and walked 20 feet to the nearest (lights on) home and reported him/asked for an escort back to my apartment....the house happened to be where our music teacher and family lived, although i didn' know it at that moment!

He was long gone when the home owner and I came out of the house.

Mr. Porty and I got in our car and drove the neighborhood to see if we could spot the stalker....but no luck.

In hindsight, I was stupid to have faced him up; but I've got a history of doing stuff like that, and at the time it made sense.

A couple of years ago I came across an alligator just along the edge of the pond that we used to run around. I saw his head and body as I went running by but as I turned around to look at him he spun around himself and went back in the water. Another guy that was about 2 minutes behind me didn't see him at all.

Oh Oh another one!

I got pulled over by a cop once while running pre-dawn thru a rough neighborhood.. I was in the last half mile of a hard run, he stopped me because he thought I was running from a crime scene. Same neighborhood, different year I saw a young guy running thru backyards as cruisers circled the area. I pointed out where I thought the guy had gone to one of the cops. A short while later a cruiser drove by with perp in back.
