Here we go again. Hopefully they've learned a thing or two from last year's experience. Registration opened 2/1/8.

http://www.thenorthface.com/endurancechallenge/

Beardo - where do you train up there? I've run the roads thru Harriman, as well as running up Perkins, but I know nothing of the trails that are up there.

I wish I could run it as my virginal 50M. But I don't think there is any way I can train for it sufficiently over the winter If I do it, I'll most likely go for one of the shorter distances and run for fun...

It all depends on how crazy my office is (who am I kidding - a CPA's office the last weekend of tax season?)....

Come down to DC in September! Plenty of time to train. Great Falls is a nice place to run. Love watching girls lose their virginity!

Oh, shoot, did I say that?

Here's a great loop out of the parking lot at Bear Mtn.:

Hit the Suffern-Bear Mtn. trail (yellow blaze) above the skate rink; take the SBM until it connects with the Ramapo-Dunderberg (red blaze); take the RD until it connects with the Appalachian Trail (white blaze); the AT will lead you back to parking lot. There's a lot of climbing in this loop--SMB takes you over West Mountain, the AT will take you back over it further north and then Bear Mtn. But beyond those climbs, there are lots of steep ups and downs.

I'm partial these days to heading a bit farther north, to Cold Spring on the other side of the Hudson. The climbs are generally bigger, and a few of the trails are less rocky.

BTW, you can probably pick up maps at Tent and Trail in Tribeca. Once you have those, there are a lot of nice trails south of West Mountain.

Yes, you did. You are an evil, evil man, and I love it A 50 in September I can do, and it will leave me enough time to recover before the Team Slug 50k later that month (and the NYC Marathon in November).

Thanks for the directions! Once tax season is over I'll try to rope someone into joining me for a bit of exploration! I'm getting tired of only running the trail from Nyack to Haverstraw...it's lovely, but it's the only one I know (aside from a very flat one from Nyack to Piermont)...

i'm on the sidelines for bear mountain as well...

brennan, another possibility - much less attractive (since it'll be on park roads), but a lot less costly... on 3/29 b.u.s. is putting on a 60k in queens. richie sent out a mailing about it - but no details yet. i can't do it (signed up for h.a.t. already)...

durt, looking forward to seeing you again down at umstead!

Actually, it's much worse than that. I'm an actor.

My father is a CPA, and years ago I got roped into answering the phones here when the secretary quit. One thing led to another, classes were taken, and now I do tax returns instead of waiting tables.

He's lucky that I rarely get acting gigs during the winter

when i got out of law school, back in the day of silent films, one of the members of our starting class was an actor! she would skip out for an hour or two occassionally during the week to go on auditions. she actually quit her associate position to take a waitressing job to give her more time to go on auditions!! yes, truth is stranger than fiction! 18 years later she's a soccer mom w/two kids in ct!

durt - absolutely no broken bones of any kind at umstead... that is, unless you're going to audition for a part in a movie

i agree. (i ran with Durt for this race) The race has issues, some of them pretty major, but the organizers were very receptive to runner feedback and overall it was a good race. It is, unfortunately, one week after the Grand Teton 100, so i will bow out for the race this year

Come run a shorter distance with me! There's no way I can train for a 50M, but I can do a shorter one

Never mind the fact that I'll have to drive into work afterwards....
