Since my divorce, and being alone now on thanksgiving for the third year - my 'non-traditional' thanksgiving dinner is now becoming my tradition.

We always had a very large traditional Thanksgiving at my in-laws: 30 plus people - tables everywhere - and just a lot of food.

Now - it's just me and my dog - so

On our menu?

Grilled Steaks (he gets one too)

Asparagus on the grill.

Beer - maybe wine depending

I'm thinking about buying a pumpkin pie - but if I do, I'll wind up eating the entire thing myself.

Then - move to the couch and vegetate and watch "The West Wing"

For those of you who aren't doing 'traditional' stuff - what's your Thursday looking to be ?

My side:

no sitting around boozing and grazing snackage all day. No noon meal.

We live close and see each other all the time; so a nice cozy 'traditional' evening meal is all we do.

DH's side: we take my MIL and my BIL out on day-after for either Italian or Chinese...the most I can tolerate Aileen is two hours; so, this works out perfectly.

As for Xmas Eve:

my side of the family is not into marshmallow sweet potato casseroles, jello molds, or egg nog

My Sister's hubby is a head journeyman meat cutter...he sets us up with thick lovely premium tenderloin center cuts, which he then grills to perfection...no ham, turkey, goose, yadda for our troop.

Xmas Day:

MIL and BIL come to our place for my homemade lasagna, french bread, la la la la....again, no ham/turkey/goose

I woudl LOVE to just cut to the turkey sandwiches and anc cut out the big dinner!... We have the usual but last year when I hurt my knee( again) we started a new tradition- DS makes the mashed potatoes and DD makes the apple pie. DH cooks the turkey usually.. sometimes smoking it on the BBQ.

I hope you all enjoy your alternative feasts! ( and your dog too Rich! ...lucky canine !)

Well, I'm not exactly sure. The relatives have not called me so if I eat by myself tomorrow I suspect Hebrew National hot dogs will be on the menu. For safety I guess I'll pick up some bread and milk tonight after work. Matter of fact, cornbread and milk might not be too bad for tomorrow night.

On the other hand I do have some stove top stuffing I can fix for dinner. I'll just be missing the turkey.

This year we're doing the potluck at our church, so no clean up or prepping this year.

Christmas food in my family has traditionally been tamales, of course. I don't make them very well, so we need to find someone to buy from.

Well, the relatives called tonight so I'm going to Centerville shortly after noon tomorrow for a 2:00 Thanksgiving dinner. And then on Friday we are meeting around 5:00 for a second Thanksgiving dinner.

So I guess the dog will get to have some Hebrew National hot dogs tomorrow and Friday since I won't be eating them. The cat only eats ham, roast beef and tuna in human foods so I guess I'll fix him up with some tuna for the holiday.

I always got made fun of for the appearance of my tamales. So, I retired long ago (like in high school). They're easier to buy.

My mom would always make me vegetarian ones, with spiced potatoes, peas, and carrots. Those I miss.

I've had some very good ones with squash and monterrey jack cheese. I have to admit that traditional pork tamales are my favorite, though.

Unsavoury Legume, what winery and vintage?! I can't believe you left out that detail.

We gathered with friends. Much was the usual fixin's but we also had some different dishes. Cheese risotto stuffed mini-bell peppers were good, a gluten free dressing stuffed pie pumpkin was extra good since it had some gruyere cheese in it. Two pies, a regular pecan pie, and a pumpkin pie without the crust for the gluten-free eater in our group. The pies were consumed after a brief walk. Whipping the cream with a wisk takes a while, but it turned out quite well. And one person brought a dessert beer which was extremely tasty. Southern Tier Imperial Creme Brulee Stout. Very strong vanilla and caramel flavors. That's the second beer I've had from that brewery, and both have been quite good.

More than one kind of wine was consumed. Despite chastising the Unsavoury Legume for such, I didn't note all the wineries and vintages represented.

I forgot to eat before work and was there from 10:45-8:00 ... got home and had 2 keystone lights and a cold bagel with peanut butter.

I prepared things like artichoke stuffing, sour cream and chive mashed potatoes, harvard beets, cranberry salad for our feast that will be occuring this evening ... pretty traditional here ... got up this morning and made a pumpkin praline pie and a cranberry pie, baked the sweet potatoes and the turkey is basted with real butter and herbs and is roasting at this moment ...

I bought a couple white wines for hubby that I will sample but not likely like ( I can't find any wine I like but I always try the new ones) Chateau Ste Michelle Reisling and Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling

anyways .. hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving and are enjoying a long weekend with family and loved ones.
