My sister and I are looking at doing a duathlon series this summer. Since this would be new territory for both of us, I need some pointers.

All I have is a mountain bike. From what I've read, they have a fat tire division for this. Should I bother getting slicks and an aero bar?

I'm dreading the idea of riding the bike in running shorts. Any recommendations?

Shoes? Anything different I should know?

If you guys can give me anything, that would be great.

Thanks!

Aero bars on a mountain bike would probably get you laughs. Slicks are a possibility - but I'd do the first race first and see what you think after that.

Do the run in biking shorts. Or tri-shorts (same thing, thinner pad). It just works.

One on each foot. Depending on the distances, you might just go with running shoes and sacrifice the gain from biking shoes for the benefit of not having to change. Depends on your pedals too.

I have an old Eureka vacuum cleaner in the garage - it's yours if you pick it up.

I put slicks on my old mountain bike and raced on it, worked just fine. In fact, the slicks are still on it and now it's my commuter.

What kind of pedals are on it? Toe cages? If so, do the whole race in your running shoes.

LRR, thanks for the vacuum. I can use that for a consulation prize for my sister when I beat her.

I just got back from a slef-imposed field trip/learning expedition where I threw all sorts of questions at the sales people that got in my way.

Slicks are a definite. I'm definitely thinking about the trishorts. And I do need to get toe cages, but I think I'll wait on the aero bars. They're alot more than I would have thought. Maybe next year.

Thanks for your advise, everyone. I really appreciate it.
