Hi,

We are relocating to NY from Ca.and the availabliity of trails and Ultras is a concern. We are across the river from the Bear Mountain area. What would be the best source for me to find both trails and events ?

 Thank You.

 Regards,

Ok, first let me say that I personally prefer CA trails, especially in the Bay Area, over local trails - but that doesn't mean you'll be starving here. In fact the trails around here are very plentiful and actually nice. You're right on the AT, and you can find all sorts of great stuff on both sides of the river. For trail maps, the NY/NJ Trail Conference produces excellent (and I mean unbelievable) maps of all the trails in the area. They're a great resource - and you can find their maps in any camping/hiking shop. You can also go to the conference HQ in Mahwah (30 minutes from the Bear Mountain Bridge) and buy everything there. They also have a great book called Harriman/Bear Mountain Trails with provides a ton of historical perspective to every trail in those two parks.

Within 20 minutes of your house, you can buy the mapsets for Harriman/Bear Mountain, East Hudson, and West Hudson trails. Within an hour, you can buy South Taconic, North Jersey, Sterling Forest, Shawagunk, Palisades, and Catskills.

Your first hike/run when you get there should be Breakneck Ridge. Don't miss Breakneck Ridge. You'll also find a lot of ultrarunner company at Rockefeller State Park, which is just a hop/skip/jump from you. You'll want to buy an empire passport next Spring, which gives you free parking at every state park in NY from April to April. It's something like $65 and *will* pay for itself.

Race Calendars for ultras are pretty much the same that you have out west - they're national: ultrarunner, trail runner, run100s, realendurance, multidays, etc. For shorter races, check out raceforum.com, http://www.mhrrc.org/, http://www.orangerunnersclub.org/calendar.htm, and rockland road runners. I don't know specifically about a site for westchester road runner clubs/calendars - but I'm sure there is one. Of course, there's also NY Road Runners. Don't forget also about the holiday marathons - http://theholidaymarathons.com/.
