Two races for people who think they might like to run near the ocean:

There's a spring 100 miler on the Outer Banks, NC, called the Graveyard 100, I think. Point to point and flat, but you have to contend with the early spring weather there and the wind. Sounds like a beautiful venue, but if he wind is in your face for 100 miles, that may not be fun.

Two weeks ago, I ran in a trial run of the Cape Cod 100 in MA. It was all road or bike path, minimal aid - fatass style, from Woods Hole to Provincetown. The weather was great; the Cape is beautiful in October. I loved it. That may become a bigger race in 2012.

I am probably going to do the Long Haul 100 in FLA in January. There are so many races, so hard to keep up with them!

I ran the inaugural Gibbet 50 this year (same weekend as Grindstone). Very flat course (800 feet total elevation for 50 miles). Groomed trails, some loose sand. A few roots. It's a fast course. There is never a need to walk. Consider I ran an 11:44 at Masochist... I ran a 9:47 at the Gibbet.

It was very small this first year: 34 folks signed up for the 50. 17 or so finished. (DNS/DNFs aren't listed.) There was a 25 mile option as well. Next year it'll be marathon and 50 miler.

There's a 24 hour that goes on out here in Hampton, VA in April (21 April 2012) on a 3-4 mile loop. Also groomed trail, some sand. Unfortunately I have other engagements on that day. It's not exactly new though. They've had it for a few years.
