those are tough times.. I wasnt close to make it to the marathon time of 3:38 but could do 1:44 for a half no problem. Now the half time for 45-49 is 1:34, full time is 3:10, yikes. Thats like a semi-elite. The current qualifying times are still good for 2012, so I had better get busy to run a half if I want to squeeze myself in for the 2012 race. Otherwise, I will have to maintain my 1:40 half shape till age 50 (another 5 yrs!)

Who is trying to squeeze in to grab a guarateed spot for the 2012 NYCM?

Well, there is always the lottery. No plans for 2012 since I'm doing it in 18 days. 2:50 for a 40-44 Male is tough but I'm glad they are maintaining their standards.

Good luck with qualifying for 2012.

I have friends who are trying to get to qualifying standards so that they can register for the 2012 race before the standards tighten, and if they do then I will also register. I am in with the current standards but, honestly, will not do the race unless my friends get in because, well, I'm not really so keen on a 50 thousand participant race when there are so many other marathons out there to sample. Then again, I know I could get my family to come out to cheer on and party afterward.

As for the qualifying standards, before passing judgment know that with those standards NYC Marathon is not trying to be Boston. The standards should be tight because they are there so that the top end of the field in age groups stays competitive, so if a fast age grouper wants to get in, they can. This isn't about Boston. It's about keeping the top end of that race strong. Those standards aren't exactly for me or you, Yoshi -- they are for what Mike can do and better.

With all of that said, if you, Yoshi, or others plan to register this April for the 2012 race, or if during the time between now and then you qualify and plan to register, please let me know, because the more people I know doing the race, the more likely I will be to do it myself.

The next "big" race I'd like to do is either Chicago or Berlin. There are many others that hold my interest, but those would likely be the first to go down. However, if my wife suddenly said, "Let's go to Paris next year," then Paris would be it. But if I had a choice, I'd be after Chicago or Berlin.

Depending on how the year shakes out next year, my wife and I have had serious talks about doing the Reykjavik Marathon in Iceland. Race is in August, and we could probably do it right for not too-too much coin. We would consider that if I do not sign up for TransAlpine.

All: Monica is in for next year, she will be ready. I am IN since I have been in the lottery for 3 years already. I'm doing the Rev3 in Sept and should be good to go!

Don't get me wrong - I am not complaining or anything. It is great to the sport of marathoning, the competitive bar has been risen and some talented runners are extra-motivated to get in the race. NYCM may be just another marathon, but because of the tough(er) qualifying time and showcasing the beautiy of NYC, I would like to run once.

Good luck Mike in 18 days! Hope your taper is going well.

Thor - how in the world would the marathon in Iceland pronouced?! I am not sure if you would like Chicago - I don't hear much good thing about it, maybe because the four out of the last five years were HOT.

Maui (where we got married) and Catalina Island (where we met) are on the top of my list. Maybe when kids are out of home....... let's see.... 7 more yrs? (yes, we are kicking them out for college)

If you can speak French, we're on!

I was there on my honeymoon and, honestly, because we stayed in a private residence (a $3M flat of a friend) that was off the beaten path (but was very close to the Eiffel Tower), we struggled to get by. The only place I aced was the corner bakery, because all I had to do was point at what I wanted behind the glass showcase, hold up a finger or two with the number I wanted, and put my money on the counter for them to take. Would have been better to stay in a touristy hotel where people would want try to communicate with us.

But it was fun. Just couldn't chat with many people. Which is why we LOVED London and the pub scene. Each day we'd venture to the nearest pub and wind up making all sorts of friends and learning more about the area and people than we did in Paris. Stupid language barrier!

To be honest, I haven't met a marathon that I didn't like. My words surrounding marathons that are "too big", "too crowded", etc, are about those that I've run before. In other words, since I have run the New York City Marathon (went 2:59:58 in 1994!), and since I know how "horded" it can be with all the crowds, I don't need to do it again. But I have to admit that the more I talk/think about it, the more I'm thinking perhaps that I should do it!

As for Chicago, I'd like to sample Chicago to see what it's all about. I love doing events, especially marathons, for the first time. It is a race that I would probably be one-and-done with, again, due to the crowds and, honestly, the fact that there are so many other experiences (marathons) out there. I cringe when I talk to some of my local friends here, when they remind me that of their 10 or 12 marathons they've run, 9 (or 11) have been Boston. It's like... they are missing out!

Qui, je parle francais. We went in March 2009 (second trip for each of us, first together) and had a wonderful time in the Marais area. I took French in school and fortunately am able to get it back with relatively little practice. If someone spoke to me in English I would ask them to speak to me in French (slowly!) and they were happy to oblige and smile and laugh with me if I got anything wrong.

Oh...and Iceland is on the bucket list of places to visit - either Iceland or Norway for my 40th birthday...I have 8 years to save.

Taper? Not really. I'm still in the ramp up stage of my training. I took some time off, kinda unintentionally, after IMLP. Just going to take this one as a long training day (albeit a sub 3 training day).

Chicago was only hot 1 stinking year. Come on, you're a midwest girl, I thought you were tougher than that! You never know what you're going to get with Chicago, when I did it in 2006 it was raining and I was damn near hypothermic. I still went 3:00:30 though, didn't hear me complaining about the weather!

I'm going to call you on this one buddy. Start in corral 1 and Boston and Chicago (and I bet NYC) aren't crowded at all! Plus you end getting to the bar earlier than everyone else.

Chicago is a great race from the spectator side because the loop course makes it much easier to catch the action at multiple spots. With a bike I've managed to volunteer at mile 2 and still catch my buddies at 3 or 4 spots on the course.

There are a lot of great marathons out there to experience and the small marathons have a different vibe (especially the trail marathons) that is awesome. But I'm a big fan of the larger ones also, although admittedly I'm not waiting 30 min to get across the starting line.

it's good to see running getting popular agin. I agree with Thor, I have not done the race but understand the logistics are trying, worse than Boston in terms of standing around for a long time prior to the start. I like a race with a couple thousand people in a second tier city where you can just walk up to the start line when you are all nice and warmed up but still have people to run with all day. I ran a ton of Columbus OH marathons and found that to be the perfect size race to do my best.

You're calling me on the wrong thing. When I say I don't like to be bothered with "crowded" marathons, I don't mean in-race. I am blessed to be fast enough where, honestly, the ONLY marathon where I felt crowded was London Marathon, where I went sub-3 hours and didn't get elbow room until mile 19 -- and this is no exaggeration -- and even then, I never got slowed down due to crowds.

I don't like the big, big city marathons for the mere fact that getting around pre- and post-event often sucks. Even getting to dinner the night before... it often is a hassle. That's what I mean by crowds. And as I mentioned, I really want to do Chicago, and not for a second do I feel as if I will be slowed down by crowds, but I might be slowed down in getting to dinner the night before, race start morning of, a beer in the bar after I gather my friends... that sort of thing. And if it's a big city marathon in which you have to drive, that's often the worst!

My ultimate favorite sized marathon is between 500 and 2500. Toronto has two GREAT city marathons. Montreal too. Many amazing marathons out there.

And I'm with you: Catalina is something I would love to do one day. Otts did it last year!!!
The second tier cities are my favorites for marathons. Toronto, Montreal, Hartford, and so many more... 500 to 2500 is perfect. I'd like to get to Rochester or Buffalo one of theses years.

buffalo had just over 800 this spring, mid may with a winning time of 2,21, top 5 is 2.45, top 10 is 2.50, so you could be a hero in a big race for sure. Rochester is a little smaller at 500 and the times are a bit softer, but it's a nice race through the city. Buffalo is quite flat, generally cool, though it snowed 11 inches the year I ran, a freakish fluke.

I like small races better as well, staying in a school gym till 10min to the start time kind of races. Destination races will be for fun; I don't think I want to train/race seriously for those races. For this spring, a few ohio races look good such as Athens and Dayton. Or just 20min away from home, Martian but it has some rollers. I want get one in early so have enough time for biking!

I was further looking into the 2012 qualification process tonight.

I got SHOCKED and DISSAPOINTED - because you have to run the qualifying half or full time from Jan. 1, 2011 ~ Jan. 31, 2012 (assuming the same qualifying race period applies from the 2011 race). I will be in no shape of running 1:44 half marathon by the end of Nov. which is about the last half marathon around midwest. There wouldn't be any half marathon within a driving distance by the end of Jan.

Then, started thinking.... did I run any half marathon since Jan. of this year....... and realized I DID, as a tune-up for the Boston. In March, 1:41:56.

So, I am eligible for a guaranteed entry in 2012 NYCM!!! Yay!!! Woohoooooooooooo!! Now when the time comes, we will have to put DH's name in a lottery.
