I've always loved Indian/Sanskrit names, like Kalpana and Krishna(n), but you can't just pick a name like that with a regular last name.

Oh, and I can't use Ben, because my last name is Hirs (rhymes with "hers". I love to joke about that one

Same thing with Hallie---always liked that, but Hallie Hirs?

I agree that there are cool names that a ****** like me doesn't feel comfortable using. I have no ethnicity or interesting heritage. I am a floridian mutt

well, I'm just kidding, kinda....

I do like the name Ara Mae, but it's not a hit with the hubby.

I like Cora Lee, Clifton Lee, Nathaniel August, Nicholas Christian--- but all those have meaning.

My last name used to be Farber and we joked about a lot of names that could never go with that: Fiona Farber, Phoebe Farber, Finbar Farber, etc. Just sounds funny to me.

Also, I would never name a child Cathy because all the Cathys that I know have had wicked difficult childhoods; John b/c of an old boyfriend; Bonnie because I knew a Bonnie in grade school who was really mean to me. I also prefer names that are easy to spell and don't like names with unusual apostrophes such as Asi'ah.

I love the name "Benjamin" but it was ruled out for us. No way would Mark let me name one of his boys "Ben Benson"

BTW, the names we chose were Hebrew and Eastern European, we don't have any Hebrew or Eastern European heritage, but we didn't let that stop us.

There are names that family/friends have so I'd feel uncomfortable using those...

Zara, I like, but I already have a girl's name picked out and I don't think DH would go for it.

DH has nixed all names starting with B to avoid the initials BS. I liked Brandon and Brant.

We did too, but most of the names we liked were in the top 20! If you look at the nos. a name that lands above the top 10 equals a fairly small no. of names.

Oh, I like Zara! I'm putting that on my list since you aren't using it

As I told Quix last night, I'm naming my first son Elias. I don't think many will copy me, though Eli is getting popular.

My ex was wanting to name our son Bond, James Bond. We settled for a nice firm name. Alexander West. He always liked Alexander and West is a family name- Grandpa & great grandpa's middle name. Everyone named their firstborne son that for their middle name. And it is a pretty large family on Dad's side, so there are a lot of boys named West.
