I am so pleased - my mom, who ran Detroit Marathon in '79, who has section-hiked the Appalachian trail, who survived a wretched divorce and came out stronger than ever, and who has, perhaps, put on a bit of weight over the past while, has walked/run her first Half in decades, at 68.

She's an Episcopal priest, an MBA, and a techie from way back in the early days, when she worked for IBM building RPG systems for the System/34. She lurves her Garmin. She's pretty cool. I think she belongs here.

Here is her report.

I went hoping to make 3:30 and knowing it would be a stretch.

I haven't run since all the electronic innovations -- it made the start far
less pushy to be on chip time.

One of the things I hadn't factored in was that I would run (across road,
taking turns wide, dashing off to the porta potty) 2/10 of a mile more than
the race distance.. So I started noticing that the race course went further
from mile to mile than my Garmin said.

I had to talk to myself hard at the beginning ("let her run HER race; you
run YOUR race" as all the runners who had lined up behind me flew past...
And as I chased one racewalker. With the walking a quarter mile and then
jogging 50 left feet, I was swept a little by the excitement and found that
I was very neatly doing 15s and sub-15s [yes, I know this sounds
turtle-like to you, but for me it was pretty amazing]. It was slightly weird,
because the fast walkers would pull out ahead of me, and then I would get
to a joglet and run out in front again, and then lurch to a walk while they
caught up and went in front.

I held this quite well until the 12-mile mark, when I had to walk most of the
time in an effort to get my heart rate to drop. [Question: is "max heart
rate" for calculating the percentages "that which your heart can do while
you are still vertical?"... Because if it is, I have a newly discovered "max
heart rate." Next race I may just stop and stretch and see if I can get it
down; next race I'd also like to go in with some 13-mile easy training runs
in my pocket.

I got mixed up at the end... They had two sets of mats, the first so that
the announcer could call our names... I sort of stopped after the first and
then realized I wasn't done.

Sooooo 3:21 -- and I'm tickled pink. Not too stiff today, though the work
to come is clear ---
lose some weight
get more core strength
increase the % of jogging up to 50%
get some 12-miles and 13-miles in my pocket.

I'm considering paying $10 to download Coach Jenny's recovery plan. I'm
going to go into the lottery for Grandma's in June... I could also think of
coming out for the half-NODM which ends in Port Angeles... Are y'all going
to be around in early June?

You bet, Momz. I'm in for the NODM Half - looking forward to it!
