Great weekend. Got to spend some quality time with some PRTers and CHers all weekend. (See the PRT for some pics from the weekend.)

I really didn't know what to expect today. I've been going through a little running slump since the end of August and have blown off a few runs and have had some difficulty finding time to run at times. I had a disappointing 10K a couple of weeks so my expecations were low, but I knew I could beat my soft PR of 1:29 with ease, since I've never really run a half while being in great shape.

Last night I got out the old pace calculator and figured I could run between 1:25 and 1:26 if I was lucky because my when I plugged in my recent 10K, it gave me a predicted finish of 1:26:38. Considering I ran 20 on Monday, 5 on Thursday night, 10 on Friday morning and 5 yesterday, I was probably being optimistic. Nontheless, I decided on aiming for 6:30s to 6:35s.

It was a little chilly at the start. My teeth were chattering after I stripped off my pullover running shirt and running pants. I checked my blood sugar and it was a little on low side for the start at 81, so I ate a half of a Gel Blok. I didn't have much time to warm up, so I just ran up and down a side street a couple of times to get the muscles warmed up after seeing Caito at the start.

The start was a little confusing, with the start of the half and full marathon together, but eventually everyone figured it out. I did have to ask the guy next to me whether or not we should start running when the gun went off. Everyone started running so I guess the answer was yes.

The first mile was comfortable. I was concerned about mixing in with the full marathoners because we started a few hundred feet back, but I was able to get into the clear pretty quickly.

When I passed the first mile I was a little surprised when I looked at my watch. 6:10. Hmmm, that's a little fast, but it felt good. I conscioulsy slowed a bit to a pace that felt that I could maintain. The first half I felt pretty good, although my quads were a bit tight, possibly some ITB pain, but I was hoping it would work itself out. My splits for the first 6 were as follows:

Mile 1 6:10
Mile 2 6:15
Mile 3 6:33
Mile 4 6:19
Mile 5 6:19
Mile 6 6:19 (averaging the same pace as my 10K two weeks ago)

I hit halfway mark in 41: xx, which would have basically been my 10K PR. The next few miles were a bit tough going back into the wind and few rolling hills, so my pace slowed a bit in miles 8-10.

Mile 7 6:16
Mile 8 6:29
Mile 9 6:24
Mile 10 6:29

I think it would've been worse but I was working with 3 guys. Whoever led was breaking the wind and would fall behind. One of the guys dropped behind at mile 10 where I picked up the pace a bit. The other guy, Stevie the 19 year old mayor of Lowell (everyone was yelling for him), passed somewhere soon after 10. But I stuck with him. At mile 11 I passed him for good. But he hung in there and made a late surge trying to pass me and actually bumped me trying to squeeze in but I held him off...barely. Genie got a good pic of him making his surge at the end.

Mile 11 6:18
Mile 12 6:15
13.1 6:52 (6:14 avg)

Final time: 1:23:04 (6:21 average)
Overall place: 29/782
Division: 5/123

My final average pace was 1 second slower per mile than my 10K 2 weeks ago and my 10K PR, which was 3 seconds faster than I ran 2 weeks ago. I'm thinking I have a 10K PR in me soon.

Stellar performance, Notey! Instead of calling your old PR soft, how about calling today's race a grand slam?!
Congrats, man, that's a fantastic time.

Yes, it's wrong. I think I could have run a 1:22 last fall. I'm not in as good shape as last year.

It was; it was almost a perfect day.

Yes, I am, but I'm not sure I'm going to push it.
