So- this morning I step outside my door to do my run and turn on my garmin and wait for it to sync up and I notice... the fold between the top and and bottom (width wise) looks a little... er... odd.

So I look at it and figure it's nothing, right? I just squeeze it tight shut and go to start my run.

I go three steps and the top springs off, the electronics spill out and clatter across the pavement - breaking like stale cookies.

I emailed my coach asking if she has any Garmins in stock and the price and she said she has them and she'll give me the best price in the province.

The warranty is only 1 year. This is a 3 year old Garmin.

My garmin (and it's not a GPS one), eats batteries like crazy. Fortunately, I'm handy enough to be able to change them myself, but it's pretty difficult, and time consumimg. Still cheaper then the $$$ they want to do it for.

I read a thread a while ago where someone RAN IN THE RAIN (actually, they said light drizzle) with their Garmin, which is supposedly water resistant to 1 meter. And their Garmin stopped functioning.

The support people told him that the Garmin would indeed survive in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, but, since it was raining, the rain "forced the water" into the unit.

Which is garbage, of course.

Call them anyway. I've never had a problem they weren't willing to help with in some way, even outside the warranty period. I've had great customer service experiences with them.

If you strike out with Garmin CustServ, I might sell you my 305, if you're interested.
